omidbasir- Paul Green initially joined Chelsea in 2013 as the assistant manager to Emma Hayes, transitioning from Doncaster Rovers Belles. Over the years, he became a pivotal figure in west London, spearheading player recruitment and contributing to the construction of an impressive Chelsea Women’s team. Under his guidance, the club secured eight WSL titles, six FA Cups, three League Cup championships, and reached the Champions League final in the 2020-21 season. Green was also instrumental in the decision to appoint Bompastor as Hayes’ successor after her departure in 2024 to coach the USWNT.

Bompastor, who joined from Lyon, achieved an unbeaten domestic treble in her inaugural season with Chelsea.

The club announced Green’s departure in a statement, which read: “Chelsea Women can confirm that Paul Green has left his role as Head of Women’s Football. Paul has spent 13 years at the club, having joined in 2013 during the formative stages of Chelsea Women. Throughout his tenure, he played a crucial role in the development and growth of the women’s program, laying strong foundations and evolving Chelsea Women into one of the premier teams both domestically and in Europe. His commitment, expertise, and professionalism have been highly valued, contributing to a sustained period of success during which the team has won 19 trophies. The Club extends its gratitude to Paul for his dedication and service over the past decade and wishes him well in his future endeavors.”

Amidst Green’s exit, Bompastor has faced scrutiny as Chelsea trails 12 points behind WSL leaders Manchester City. Despite the pressures, the club responded by offering her a long-term contract. Following this, Chelsea secured a 2-0 victory against Tottenham, prompting Bompastor to express her determination. She stated, “Even if we all know we can’t control everything, we felt it was unfair to face such criticism. I know who I am; I don’t need external validation. I am committed to supporting my players effectively and ensuring they enter the pitch with clarity on their objectives. My confidence remains unshaken.”

Green’s departure adds to the challenges currently facing both Bompastor and Chelsea. The team is set to return to WSL action on Sunday against struggling Liverpool.
