omidbasir- LONDON — Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has indicated that a controversial handball incident leading to Leeds United’s equalizer negatively impacted his team’s performance, resulting in a lost two-goal lead at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

Chelsea appeared to be in a commanding position after João Pedro’s first-half goal and a penalty from Cole Palmer in the second half, establishing a two-goal advantage with just thirty minutes remaining.

However, the match took a dramatic turn as Chelsea conceded two goals within five minutes. Lukas Nmecha converted a penalty before substitute Noah Okafor found the net to secure a point for the visitors.

Rosenior specifically criticized the buildup to Okafor’s equalizer, alleging that Jayden Bogle committed a handball in the sequence. “The lad [Bogle] handballs it,” Rosenior stated in a post-match news conference. “It affects my players in that moment; they believe it’s a handball, we lose focus, fail to clear the ball, and they score.”

He added, “Following that moment, we faced relentless pressure for 25 minutes. We need to ensure we handle vital moments and maintain professionalism. It’s common to endure a challenging phase in the game, but it is perplexing that they managed to score two goals in a mere five minutes when we dominated for the other 90 minutes.”

Chelsea’s superiority was underscored by Leeds’ inability to register a shot on target until their second-half penalty, leaving many at Stamford Bridge incredulous as the two-goal lead evaporated.

“Honestly, I can hardly recall Leeds having a shot or significant moment in the game before Nmecha’s goal,” Rosenior remarked. “Our possession, pressing, and energy were exemplary, making it an even more bitter pill to swallow that we lost.”

He expressed further frustration after the second Leeds goal, noting, “There were several aspects I will highlight to the players that contributed to the shift in momentum. It’s a collective issue. If we can maintain focus and concentration for the full 90 minutes, this team has incredible potential, which was evident for about 90% of today’s match.”

With a month into his tenure, Rosenior feels confident about identifying areas for improvement. “I am aware of what we need to work on, and it is crucial that we have the time to address these aspects.”
