However, his efforts were insufficient to retain his position. The 60-year-old expressed that he felt he was always in a losing battle, often constrained by limitations in the transfer market.

In an interview with The Overlap, Postecoglou discussed Tottenham’s ongoing struggle for stability and continuity, noting that even renowned managers like Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho have not met expectations. He remarked, “If you consider the list of managers, there isn’t a consistent strategy in what they aim to achieve. Part of Tottenham’s identity is a preference for a specific style of play.”

He elaborated on Pochettino’s tenure, acknowledging that the team was on the right path but underscoring the significant impact of Harry Kane’s departure. “Had I had Harry in my first year, I firmly believe we would have clinched a Champions League spot. His absence created an irreplaceable void.”

Postecoglou continued to analyze the managerial changes at Spurs, stating, “The club wanted winners, leading to Mourinho’s appointment, yet he was dismissed just before a cup final. Then came Antonio Conte, who also departed after a brief period. I was told to focus on attractive football, despite the club’s previous Champions League success under Antonio.”

He questioned the overarching vision for the club, acknowledging its impressive infrastructure but lamenting the lack of significant investment in player wages. He stated, “When we attempted to sign players, we found ourselves excluded from the market for key talent. Finishing fifth did not secure us Champions League football, and thus we couldn’t afford the quality players needed to advance.”

Postecoglou reflected on Tottenham’s recruitment strategy, contrasting it with rivals like Arsenal, who recently invested heavily in players such as Declan Rice. He noted, “In the past, Tottenham did not match such spending. While finances were indeed affected by stadium construction, the magnitude of missing out on Champions League football was a substantial setback.”

He expressed that a critical factor in success is the willingness to take risks, a mindset he believes Tottenham has not fully embraced. Furthermore, he observed, “The club perceives itself as a major player in football, yet my experiences over the last two years suggest otherwise.”

Following Postecoglou’s departure, Frank faced difficulties in reversing the team’s fortunes, despite his valuable Premier League experience at Brentford. Postecoglou remarked on the ensuing uncertainty, stating, “The club has fostered an environment of unpredictability with no guarantees of success, regardless of who is appointed as manager.”

Looking ahead, Spurs are set for a derby clash against Arsenal on February 22 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It remains uncertain who will lead the team into that fixture, as well as the upcoming Champions League matches, where progress to the last 16 is anticipated.
