Sevilla Faces Crucial Month in Fight for SurvivalSevilla Faces Crucial Month in Fight for Survival

omidbasir- Sevilla FC is approaching a critical month in its battle for league survival. Over the next four weeks, the team will face three direct competitors—Alavés, Getafe, and Rayo Vallecano—along with a derby that carries significant emotional weight. Head Coach Matías Almeyda will need as many players as possible for these matches, a challenge exacerbated by recent injury issues.

Compounding the situation, Sevilla is currently facing an immediate threat: the risk of player suspensions due to accumulated yellow cards. At present, five players are on the verge of suspension: César Azpilicueta, José Ángel Carmona, Gabriel Suazo, Tanguy Nianzou, and Lucien Agoumé. Notably, four of these players are defenders, and Suazo lacks a natural replacement since Oso is expected to be sidelined for approximately a month due to injury. This predicament is not surprising, as Sevilla has consistently led LaLiga in yellow cards throughout the season, accumulating a total of 69 cautions.

“The good news is that the team is regaining many injured players, which means that if one falls out, another can step in. Of course, we prefer to have all players available, but I’m not worried because everyone is incredibly prepared,” remarked Nemanja Gudelj regarding the players on the brink of suspension. Currently, Andrés Castrín, Marcao, Oso, and Rubén Vargas are nursing injuries, although Castrín may rejoin the squad as early as next week.

Given the number of players at risk of suspension, it is quite likely that one or more will be sidelined during the upcoming Sevilla derby, scheduled for Sunday, March 1, at 18:30. This risk heightens considering that Sevilla’s preceding opponent, Getafe, ranks as the third most cautioned team in the league. In comparison, the only player for Real Betis with four yellow cards is Valentín Gómez. This is yet another crucial factor for Almeyda to manage as he seeks positive results in the coming weeks.
