omidbasir- Wrexham’s manager, Phil Parkinson, has expressed his support for the proposed expansion of the Championship playoff system, which aims to increase the number of teams competing for promotion from four to six starting next season. This critical decision is slated to be discussed at an extraordinary general meeting next month.

Despite concerns raised by the Premier League regarding a potential dilution of quality within the division, Parkinson remains optimistic. His sixth-placed side is gearing up to face third-placed Ipswich in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday, and he firmly believes in the Championship’s depth of talent.

“The competitiveness of this division is remarkable. Just look at how tightly contested it is; numerous teams are in contention, and we are among them,” he remarked. He cited clubs like Sunderland as examples of teams that have successfully transitioned to the Premier League after utilizing TV revenue wisely to bolster their positions.

Parkinson also emphasized the presence of several historically significant clubs in the Championship that, in terms of support, surpass some current Premier League teams.

As for potential distractions from cup commitments, Parkinson is undeterred. He views the opportunity to progress in the FA Cup as a welcome challenge. “While it can be seen as a distraction, I consider it a positive one. We often talk about the magic of the FA Cup, and when these matches arise, I want us to engage with enthusiasm and positivity in our performance.”

He aims to guide Wrexham into the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time since the 1996-97 season.
