omidbasir- In a recent press conference, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola addressed comments made by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, regarding immigration. Ratcliffe had stated that the UK had been “colonised by immigrants,” a remark that stirred controversy and prompted an apology for offending some individuals. He maintained, however, that an “open debate” on the topic is necessary.

Guardiola responded by asserting that a more inclusive approach to different cultures would enhance societal well-being. He noted, “Everyone desires a better life. Each person seeks a brighter future for themselves, their families, and their communities. Opportunities can arise in either the place of one’s birth or elsewhere. Thus, where one is born should not be a determining factor.”

He further emphasized that many individuals migrate from their home countries due to prevailing issues, rather than a desire to leave. “The more we genuinely embrace other cultures, the better society we will create—this is a belief I hold without doubt,” Guardiola stated.

Reflecting on the global immigration dilemma, Guardiola remarked, “We often perceive immigrants or those from different nations as the source of our problems. This mindset is problematic; the circumstances of our birth are beyond our control. I am Catalan, and you are British—what influence did we have on that?”

He concluded by reiterating that the pursuit of a better life transcends borders, affirming that factors such as skin color or birthplace should not dictate one’s opportunities.
