omidbasir- Julian Ryerson of Borussia Dortmund rightfully received the GGFN Man-of-the-Match award after playing a pivotal role in the team’s impressive 4-0 Bundesliga triumph over Mainz, providing assists for all four goals.

The Norwegian defender made a significant impact in the first half, setting a new club record with three assists during the opening 45 minutes. This achievement marks the first time a Dortmund player has recorded three assists in a single half of Bundesliga history.

In a post-match interview with Sky Germany, the 28-year-old modestly stated, “It’s not all that difficult. I just have to place the ball in the right spot. The others finish it off. There are also other contributions that aren’t visible to the observers, such as the blocking efforts.”

Ryerson remained humble about his contribution to the fourth goal, which came in the 84th minute. He provided the corner kick that ultimately led to a goal credited to Ramy Bensebaini, although the ball deflected off Mainz defender Dominik Kohr. “I’m not really interested in the match-ball,” Ryerson remarked. “Perhaps if I receive credit for the assist on the fourth goal, I’ll reconsider. However, the recognition belongs to the goal scorers.”

With three of Dortmund’s four goals resulting from set pieces, head coach Niko Kovac had much to celebrate. After changing set-piece coaches at the beginning of the year, his team executed set plays flawlessly, even in the absence of main set-piece taker Nico Schlotterbeck, who was suspended for the match.

Kovac noted, “We performed well on set plays during the first half of the season, but now we are perfecting the craft. I cannot recall the last time we in Dortmund had a game featuring three headed goals. That makes this victory all the more exceptional.”
