Wayne Rooney Reflects on Management Journey and Future Aspirations

Rooney’s managerial journey continued with a brief tenure at D.C. United in Major League Soccer, where he spent just 83 days under NFL legend Tom Brady and Birmingham’s American ownership. His time at St. Andrew’s was met with considerable difficulties, leading to a swift exit. Subsequently, he managed Plymouth Argyle for only 25 matches before his departure.

On New Year’s Eve 2024, Rooney parted ways with Plymouth and has since been absent from the coaching scene. He has returned to punditry, securing a lucrative contract that allows him to appear regularly on ‘Match of the Day.’ This time away from management has afforded him the chance to spend valuable moments with his family, while his wife Coleen has also negotiated a significant documentary deal with Disney+.

Rooney has enjoyed watching his eldest son Kai play for Manchester United’s youth teams, with Kai recently participating in an FA Youth Cup match at Old Trafford.

Though Rooney is content with his current endeavors, he remains receptive to coaching roles. In a recent interview on the ‘No Tippy Tappy Football’ podcast, he expressed his willingness to return to management for the right opportunity, emphasizing that he is not in a rush to make a decision.

When asked about the possibility of taking on an assistant role, he affirmed his openness, particularly regarding a return to Manchester United or Everton—two clubs that hold sentimental value for him.

There have been discussions about Rooney potentially joining United’s backroom staff following the departure of Ruben Amorim in early 2026. Amidst the transition, Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick have taken on interim roles. Rooney has a good rapport with both and stated on ‘The Wayne Rooney Show’ that he would eagerly accept an invitation to contribute to the club.

Despite facing challenges as a manager, Rooney has taken on demanding positions, and time remains on his side to find success while leveraging his extensive experience. Ex-teammate Wes Brown suggests that an emotional return to Manchester United should not be dismissed. He remarked that every former player dreams of managing at a major club and mentioned that Rooney, still early in his managerial career, has ambitions to fulfill that dream.
