Controversy Surrounds Eredivisie Match Amid SnowfallControversy Surrounds Eredivisie Match Amid Snowfall

omidbasir- On Sunday, snowfall blanketed the Netherlands once again, impacting the Eredivisie clash between Sparta and NEC, which kicked off at 16:45. This decision has been met with strong disapproval from Valentijn Driessen, who criticized the KNVB for allowing the match to proceed under such conditions.

In his column for De Telegraaf, Driessen stated, “The referee, Jannick van der Laan, made the only reasonable decision seven minutes too late by blowing the whistle to end the match at Het Kasteel. He should never have started the game at 16:45, given the snowy conditions.”

Driessen further emphasized that the KNVB took unwarranted risks, arguing that professional football, as a form of entertainment, must prioritize the safety and experience of its audience.

A new date for the remainder of the match has already been set—the remaining minutes between Sparta Rotterdam and NEC will resume on Tuesday evening, February 17, at 20:00. As usual, fans can follow the match live on ESPN.
