UEFA Investigates Racism Allegations During Benfica vs Real Madrid MatchUEFA Investigates Racism Allegations During Benfica vs Real Madrid Match

omidbasir- The incident occurred approximately ten minutes into the second half of the match held in Lisbon on February 17. The game was paused after players clashed, in accordance with UEFA guidelines.

Vinicius Junior, the Brazilian forward for Real Madrid, scored an impressive goal and celebrated in front of the home crowd near the corner flag. This celebration prompted objections from several Benfica players, who took issue with what they perceived as provocative behavior.

As the match was set to resume, Vinicius, standing opposite Benfica’s Prestianni, approached the referee to report alleged comments made by Prestianni. It has been claimed that racist remarks were directed at him, leading UEFA to confirm an investigation into the events surrounding the incident.

In an official statement, UEFA conveyed, “The match reports from the previous night’s fixtures are currently under review. When incidents are reported, procedural measures are initiated, and any resulting disciplinary actions will be published on the UEFA disciplinary website. At this moment, we have no further information to disclose.”

Vinicius Junior addressed the issue post-match, stating: “Racists are, above all, cowards. They need to cover their mouths with their shirts to conceal their weakness. However, they are often protected by those who should hold them accountable. Nothing that occurred today is unfamiliar to me or my team. I received a yellow card for celebrating a goal, which remains baffling to me. Ultimately, the protocol followed was poorly executed and served no meaningful purpose. I dislike being involved in these situations, particularly after a significant victory when the focus should be on Real Madrid, but it is necessary to speak out.”

Prestianni responded through social media, asserting: “I want to clarify that at no point did I utter racist insults towards Vinicius Junior, who has unfortunately misinterpreted what he believes he heard. I have never been racist towards anyone, and I regret the threats I have received from Real Madrid players.”

The Portuguese government, through the Authority for the Prevention and Fight against Violence in Sport (APCVD), is now investigating the incident to ascertain whether a racist attack occurred.

A statement from the APCVD read: “Following media reports concerning alleged insults and acts of racism directed at Real Madrid player Vinicius Jr. during the UEFA Champions League play-off match against SL Benfica, the APCVD has initiated administrative proceedings to clarify the facts.”

Should the allegations be substantiated, both Benfica and Prestianni may face sanctions ranging from financial penalties to potential referral of the case to judicial authorities. Investigations by both sporting and governmental bodies are expected to be conducted promptly, enabling decisive actions to be taken.
