Legal Action Against AFA President Claudio Tapia for Misuse of FundsLegal Action Against AFA President Claudio Tapia for Misuse of Funds

omidbasir- BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — A judge in Argentina has issued a travel ban for the president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), Claudio Tapia, along with four other officials, in connection with allegations of improper use of social security contributions.

This marks the first significant legal action taken against Tapia, who is currently under investigation for his financial dealings and asset management within the organization.

Judge Diego Amarante has summoned Tapia to testify on March 5 in the Buenos Aires courts, as noted in documents obtained by The Associated Press.

“Chiqui” Tapia is accused of neglecting to pay social contributions amounting to 19 billion pesos (approximately $12.8 million) for the years 2024 and 2025. The complaint was filed by the Customs Collection and Control Agency (ARCA).

While Tapia is required to appear in court, he has the right to refuse to testify.

The judge implemented the travel restriction due to the “seriousness of the investigated events” and to ensure that the legal proceedings are conducted without interference.

Should the travel ban remain in effect following his court appearance, Tapia will be unable to attend the men’s Finalissima match scheduled for March 27 in Qatar, where Copa América champion Argentina is set to face Euro 2024 winner Spain.

In addition to Tapia, Treasurer Pablo Toviggino, Secretary General Cristian Malaspina, General Director Gustavo Lorenzo, and former Racing Club President Víctor Blanco are also required to testify and face similar travel restrictions.

Neither Tapia nor the other officials have provided comments regarding Judge Amarante’s ruling.
