Tottenham Hotspur’s Struggles: A Cautionary Tale of Ambition and Mismanagement

In 2025, after a 17-year wait, Tottenham celebrated Europa League victory under coach Ange Postecoglou, but domestic challenges have persisted in the current season, culminating in the dismissal of Thomas Frank, the latest manager to depart from the club.

Critics have pointed to Tottenham as an example of poor business practices, with questionable decisions hindering progress. Swedish politician Mikael Damberg notably criticized the English football institution during a parliamentary address, referencing Tottenham’s current predicament amid Sweden’s own financial discussions.

He remarked, “I naturally think of Tottenham Hotspur, also known as Spurs, one of England’s most distinguished and affluent clubs, boasting a vast stadium and a dedicated supporter base—everything that signifies a ‘top team.’ Yet, despite these advantages, Tottenham finds itself in crisis, battling at the lower end of the table, just above the relegation zone. This plight is not due to a lack of resources, but rather the result of squandered opportunities.

“Wrong decisions and a tendency for short-term thinking have led to a loss of direction and stability. The term ‘Spursy’ has become synonymous with failing to capitalize on opportunities. Madame Speaker, that is precisely how the Minister of Finance is handling the Swedish economy. Sweden possesses the power, capability, and resources to thrive.”

Damberg further cautioned, “The government risks making Sweden ‘Spursy’. That will not suffice. Sweden must not emulate Tottenham.”

Postecoglou, who was relieved of his coaching duties after securing a long-awaited trophy, suggested that Tottenham may not be as formidable as they perceive themselves to be. In an interview with The Overlap, he expressed, “It’s a curious club in terms of understanding what they are trying to build. They have constructed an outstanding stadium and training facilities, yet when it comes to expenditure, particularly wages, they do not operate as a big club.

“They seem unaware that to achieve success, risks must be taken at some point. This is part of the club’s DNA, as evidenced by their motto ‘to dare is to do.’ However, their actions often contradict this philosophy.

“Regardless of one’s opinion on Daniel Levy, credit must be given for the new stadium and facilities; however, taking a cautious approach has limited their potential to win. My experience over the past two years leads me to conclude that Tottenham is not operating at the level they claim to be.”

Frank was unceremoniously dismissed after managing to win just two of his final 17 matches. He had taken the reins in north London during the summer of 2025 and has now been succeeded on an interim basis by Igor Tudor. The Croatian coach will face a challenging initiation, with his first match set to be a derby against arch-rivals Arsenal this Sunday.
