omidbasir- Arsenal held a nine-point lead over Manchester City just two weeks ago, albeit with a game in hand. That gap has now diminished to five points following City’s impressive victories over Liverpool and Fulham, while Arsenal managed draws against Brentford and Wolves. City has an extra match to play, and if they secure a win against Newcastle on Saturday, the deficit could shrink to just two points. This scenario would place considerable pressure on Arsenal as they prepare to face their local rivals, Tottenham, who will be under the guidance of new coach Igor Tudor.

Despite City’s advantageous position, Pep Guardiola remains focused solely on the immediate challenges ahead, refusing to engage in discussions about the title race with the media or his players. At a press conference on Friday, Guardiola stated, “Twelve games is a lot. My sole concern is Newcastle. I am not focused on the League Cup final against Arsenal until the time comes. For now, it’s Newcastle, then we will rest and prepare for Leeds. I cannot predict what will happen in the next twelve games; I have not spoken about it at all with my players.

“In recent days, our focus has been entirely on Newcastle. I am indifferent to the table’s position. With twelve games remaining, it is far too early to draw conclusions. I will entertain these questions when we approach the final two or three matches. The landscape can change rapidly. At one point, we were nine points behind because we had a game in hand. Once all teams have played the same number of matches, we will see the true differences. Many unpredictable events can occur before the season’s end, and with 70% of our squad being new, they lack the experience in these situations. The key is to win tomorrow.”

Antoine Semenyo has made a significant impact since his £64 million transfer from Bournemouth in January, scoring five goals and providing two assists. Guardiola commended the forward’s influence, stating, “He has not only scored frequently but also brings a unique rhythm and versatility, allowing him to play in three different positions. His transition from Bournemouth has been impressive, particularly defensively. We have faced him numerous times, and it’s yet to be seen when he will reach his peak performance. Competing in the Champions League is a new experience for him, and the knockout stages will serve as a good test. I am confident that with his mentality, he will adapt well. Typically, players adjust quickly because those who have been here longer facilitate that process.”

Guardiola confirmed that Savinho is fit to face Newcastle, potentially marking his return after an injury sustained in a 0-0 draw at Sunderland on January 1. However, Jeremy Doku remains unavailable as he continues his recovery from a knee injury. While Newcastle may feel the effects of their recent 6-1 victory over Qarabag in the Champions League, City should be well-rested after a week’s break following their FA Cup match against Salford.

The coach added, “What matters is that players feel revitalized after several months; a few days off can make a significant difference. I don’t have to exert myself physically, so it’s not an issue for me. The players benefit greatly from extended periods of rest, and they have trained well over the past two days.”

Historically, City holds an advantage in this fixture, as Newcastle has never won at the Etihad Stadium. Their last away victory against City occurred at the former Maine Road stadium under the management of Bobby Robson, who coached Guardiola during his brief stint at Barcelona.
