Sullivan, hailed as one of the most promising young talents in American soccer, displayed exceptional composure in the 61st minute as he confidently stepped up to take a vital penalty with the match on the line. Following a foul on Charlotte FC’s Nimfasha Berchimas in the box by Tajikistan’s Ramazon Bakhtaliev, Sullivan approached the penalty spot and executed a perfectly weighted panenka down the center, leaving goalkeeper Rahim Rahmonov diving in vain.

The U.S. encountered early challenges when Muhammad Nazriev put Tajikistan ahead 1-0 merely three minutes into the match. Nazriev intercepted a pass in the U.S. half and finished powerfully past goalkeeper Aidan Stokes. For the subsequent 25 minutes, the Americans struggled to penetrate Tajikistan’s well-organized defense until Sullivan provided a crucial equalizing assist in the 30th minute.

The midfielder from the Philadelphia Union delivered a precise in-swinging corner to the back post, where Berchimas leapt to head in the goal, marking a notable achievement as he became the only U.S. player to score in two editions of the FIFA U17 World Cup.

Sullivan’s penalty represents his second goal in as many matches during the tournament, having also netted the decisive goal in the Americans’ opening 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso. This win secured six points from their first two matches, ensuring the U.S. a spot in the Round of 32 with one game left to play.

Sullivan’s standout performance in Qatar adds another remarkable chapter to his burgeoning career. At just 16 years old and originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he signed with the Union in May 2024 at the tender age of 14. He has since made 18 first-team appearances and played a pivotal role in helping the club secure the 2025 MLS Supporters’ Shield.
