Ireland international and Everton centre-back, O’Brien, has expressed significant concerns regarding the safety of his family, which includes his girlfriend, Sophie Lawlor, and their infant son, Greyson. Given his extensive football commitments, the 24-year-old feels anxious about their security when he is away. As a proactive measure, he has recently acquired a striking black German Shepherd.

O’Brien believes that investing in a dog is the most effective way to safeguard his family amid escalating fears about high-profile thefts in the UK. He purchased the dog from the specialized protection firm, Chaperone K9, based on recommendations from his teammates.

In an interview with Ball magazine, O’Brien explained his rationale for the canine acquisition: “As a high-profile individual, security is crucial. It’s not only about my safety but also about ensuring my family feels secure at home while I am away. Since we have a fondness for dogs, getting Knox was a straightforward decision. He is incredibly loyal and will serve as the first line of defense if any situation arises.”

He further noted, “I selected Chaperone K9 after hearing positive feedback from fellow teammates. Their professionalism and dedication to the dogs they train, coupled with their impressive clientele, quickly convinced me.”

Amidst a concerning trend of burglaries in Cheshire’s affluent ‘Golden Triangle,’ several Premier League footballers have begun to enlist the services of former MMA fighters to bolster their home security. This affluent region, known for attracting star players from top clubs such as Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Everton, has recently seen a rise in thefts and arson, prompting athletes seeking enhanced protection.

In December 2023, Everton loanee Jack Grealish experienced a traumatic £1 million burglary, where thieves made off with jewelry. This incident occurred shortly after he celebrated winning a treble with Manchester City, leaving Grealish feeling “absolutely distraught.” He reflected on social media, saying, “This has been a traumatic experience for all of us. I am just so grateful that nobody was hurt. Although I have enjoyed many wonderful moments and achievements over the past year, this experience has overshadowed them. Those who commit these acts have no idea of the havoc they wreak on people’s lives.”

Similarly, former Manchester City star Raheem Sterling has also fallen victim to burglary attempts.

O’Brien has played in all of Everton’s 11 Premier League matches thus far this season. Although typically deployed as a right-back under manager David Moyes, who prefers to pair Michael Keane with James Tarkowski in the central defense, O’Brien made a notable appearance as a substitute in Everton’s 2-0 victory against Fulham. He is set to return to action after the international break, as Moyes’s side prepares to face Manchester United on November 24.
