Nico Williams and Selton were the standout performers in Athletic Bilbao’s recent victory over Real Oviedo, thrilling the San Mamés crowd with their energy and determination. The fans came eager to watch their star winger and the promising young midfielder who made his home debut as a lion just days after appearing against Newcastle.

After scoring a decisive goal, Nico Williams admitted the strike gave him renewed motivation to keep pushing through the physical and mental challenges posed by his pubalgia injury.

“There are times when you think about giving up because of this condition,” Nico said. “Some days it’s hard even to get out of bed. The peak of my injury came last season against Manchester, but I feel much better now. I’m doing double training sessions in the afternoons. This injury has helped me grow as a footballer and as a person — I can be impatient, but this experience is teaching me patience.”

Nico also confirmed that surgery is not currently an option.

“The progress from conservative treatment is clear, and surgery wouldn’t guarantee recovery in two months,” he explained. “I fully trust the plan we’re following. I try not to think too far ahead. While playing in the World Cup is my dream, my focus is on performing for Athletic right now.”

Reflecting on the win, the winger added:

“We’re very happy with the three points — we really needed them. We approached the game with great enthusiasm. I’m not even sure how I scored; I just kept pushing forward and got lucky.”

Nico also praised his young teammate Selton, who impressed the San Mamés crowd with his composure and boldness.

“He’s fearless,” Nico said. “He loves to take on defenders, and I’ve been really impressed since he joined our training sessions.”

For Selton, the match marked a special milestone — his first start at San Mamés.

“I’m sure someone in my family shed a tear,” the 18-year-old midfielder admitted. “Since joining the first team, everyone has treated me very well. I feel welcome and supported. Now I have to keep working hard every day — I still have a lot to learn to earn more playing time.”

The win over Oviedo not only lifted spirits in Bilbao but also underlined the club’s continued success in integrating academy talent alongside experienced players like Nico.
