Xabi Alonso Calls for Measured Self Criticism After Draw with Rayo VallecanoXabi Alonso Calls for Measured Self Criticism After Draw with Rayo Vallecano

Xabi Alonso, the head coach of Real Madrid, stated that the team needs to be both “self-critical” and “measured” in their response to the recent 0-0 draw against Rayo Vallecano.

The match in Vallecas proved challenging for Madrid, coming on the heels of a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League earlier in the week. Despite these setbacks, Alonso’s squad still holds the top position in the LaLiga standings with 31 points from 12 matches, while rivals Barcelona are set to face Celta Vigo later today.

“We were prepared for a demanding game,” Alonso remarked during his post-match news conference. “Vallecas has always been a difficult venue for us. Rayo presents a significant challenge and forces teams into a frenetic pace of play.”

This season, Real Madrid has dropped points only twice in LaLiga: suffering a 5-2 derby defeat against Atlético Madrid and the recent draw against Rayo. Alonso expressed a desire for stability in both preparation and mindset, stating, “We aim to maintain consistency in our preparation and our mentality.”

“The league is a game-by-game process… My focus is on continual growth, improvement, and maintaining a positive, constructive self-critique. It’s still early in the season, and we have a long journey ahead. We must hold ourselves to high standards, but remain measured in our assessments.”

Recently, Madrid had triumphed over Barcelona 2-1 in the Clásico, yet criticism has arisen regarding their performances, particularly following the loss at Anfield. “We are aware of our current position,” Alonso said when questioned about concerns of a potential ‘crisis.’ “In both good and challenging times, finding balance is essential. It’s a long season.”

With Dani Carvajal sidelined due to injury, there was anticipation that Trent Alexander-Arnold would start at right-back for the match against Rayo. However, he only made a late substitute appearance, with Federico Valverde preferred for the position. Alonso commented, “Trent requires a bit more time for recovery following his injury. After the international break, he will be able to prepare adequately for the upcoming challenges.”
