United’s Transfer Strategy and Wharton’s Future at Palace

Manchester United made significant investments during the summer transfer window to revamp their squad following a disappointing 2024-25 season, which saw the Red Devils finish in 15th place in the Premier League without any trophies. High-profile signings such as Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo were brought in, primarily to enhance the team’s attacking capabilities.

Coach Amorim had intentions to acquire Brighton’s midfield prodigy, Carlos Baleba, as the window drew to a close, but the transfer did not materialize. Recently, various reports have suggested that United is interested in Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, with Amorim reportedly keen on the English player’s potential.

As the January transfer window approaches, Amorim is eager to bolster his midfield and has compiled a shortlist of six candidates, which includes Wharton.

Despite the strong links to Old Trafford, Wharton has downplayed the transfer rumors in a recent interview with The Athletic. He stated, “I don’t really look into it or think too much about it. There are always rumors floating about on social media. Is it true? Is it not? You tell me. My friends and family always ask if any club is interested, and I simply respond that I wasn’t aware. I don’t know who’s spreading these rumors or who at United is expressing interest.”

He further added, “I acknowledge the rumors but continue with my day. Major clubs are often linked with numerous players, so if I’m just one of many, it doesn’t feel particularly special. I discuss future prospects with my agent, but ultimately, it depends on who is genuinely interested in pursuing me. It’s essential to prove my worth on the pitch.”

Amid the speculation surrounding Wharton’s future, Crystal Palace officials are reportedly working on a new contract offer for their standout player. Journalist Fabrizio Romano shared insights with GiveMeSport, indicating, “They intend to extend his contract. Palace has already engaged in discussions with his representatives regarding this offer. However, time will tell what unfolds, as he was deemed indispensable last summer despite having opportunities to leave.”

Romano also noted Wharton’s professionalism throughout previous transfer rumors, stating, “Palace is pleased with Adam, and he seems content at the club. He understands that he may be in the best environment for his development. Yet, we cannot predict the future; should a significant opportunity arise, it will be interesting to see how he responds.”

Additionally, Real Madrid’s interest in Wharton surfaced during the last transfer window. The Spanish giants have yet to replace Toni Kroos, who retired in 2024, or Luka Modric in midfield. Although no formal approach was made for Wharton, comments from his Palace teammate, Yeremy Pino, have further ignited speculation. Pino remarked, “Adam can do everything. Defensively, he is a fighter. He wins many balls and has the technical ability to play for the Spain national team, without a doubt.”
