Werder Bremen’s Bundesliga season is experiencing a notable resurgence, largely attributed to the performance of Danish midfielder Jens Stage. The team faced challenges early on, particularly as Stage worked to regain his form following an injury sustained during training camp.

Now back to his best, the 29-year-old is making an impact by scoring goals from his deep midfield position. After a remarkable tally of ten goals last season, Stage has already found the back of the net four times in just eight league appearances this term. Notably, he has scored three goals in his last four starts, including pivotal late equalizers against Mainz and Wolfsburg in recent fixtures.

Stage’s latest goal against Wolfsburg, which further deepened the team’s crisis, brought mixed emotions for the twice-capped Danish international. The match was particularly poignant for Stage, who has close ties to several players within Wolfsburg, a team currently managed by a Danish executive.

On Friday night, Stage had the opportunity to play against one of his personal idols, Danish legend Christian Eriksen. Despite Eriksen’s struggles, Stage expressed admiration for his fellow countryman, sharing his sentiments in the mixed zone after the match. “Wolfsburg is going through a difficult phase, which I’m sorry about because I have a lot of good friends there,” Stage commented. “Jonas Wind is a great friend of mine, as are Andreas Skov Olsen and Joakim Maehle. Christian Eriksen is a role model for me as a Dane. It was special to play against him. I played with him once on the national team, but this was the first time I faced him as an opponent.”
