As SC Freiburg captain Christian Günter approached the all-time club record of 441 appearances, teammate and fellow club stalwart Vincenzo Grifo expressed his desire to celebrate this milestone with a toast over a glass of wine.

However, Günter envisioned a more grand gesture. During their Bundesliga match against FC St. Pauli, fans were treated to an impressive 5,440 liters of complimentary drinks.

Günter, after generously covering this collective round, was honored in a pre-match ceremony and granted a spot in the starting lineup by SC Freiburg head coach Julian Schuster. The 32-year-old played a modest 57 minutes before exiting the match with Freiburg leading 2-0. Although the team faced a late scare, they ultimately secured a 2-1 victory in honor of their captain.

Reflecting on the match’s tense conclusion, Günter remarked, “Psychologically, football can be challenging when you feel as if you have something to lose. However, the fact that the team managed to preserve the win makes me extremely proud and happy. There’s nothing better than playing for this club.”

Expressing his gratitude towards the fans for the free drinks, he stated, “I’m extremely grateful to many people, especially the fans. I’ll never be able to repay them, but at least I can make an effort with a small gesture.”

Hailing from the Baden-Württemberg city of Villingen-Schwenningen, Günter joined the Freiburg academy in 2006 and has remained loyal to the club throughout his career. His hometown has produced numerous talented footballers, with many young players gravitating toward either Freiburg or Stuttgart. Günter had the special opportunity to celebrate with the club’s supporters by leading post-match cheers in front of the passionate Kurve.

“When I first emerged as a young player, there were definitely some who thought, ‘Oh lad, what are you thinking for God’s sake?’” Günter reflected. “But I truly committed myself, and the fans supported me. They have always stood by me and my family.”

Following the match, Schuster commented on Günter’s leadership, saying, “It was quite the gesture. He shared many personal thoughts during an emotional team talk in the locker room. His words were impactful. He is an exceptional captain and a wonderful person.”
