Chiesa s Strong Start at Liverpool and International DecisionsChiesa s Strong Start at Liverpool and International Decisions

Federico Chiesa has made notable contributions to Liverpool this season, scoring two goals and providing three assists, marking a generally positive beginning to his campaign. He was even awarded Liverpool’s Player of the Month for September, despite not starting a single Premier League match during that time.

Italian national team coach Rino Gattuso expressed his desire to include Chiesa in Italy’s recent fixtures; however, the forward once again declined the opportunity to represent his country. This isn’t the first instance of Chiesa turning down Gattuso’s call, as the coach revealed in September that they mutually agreed on the decision. “I spoke with Federico; it was a shared decision. He didn’t feel ready to return; he wants to be at 100%. We decided it together very calmly,” Gattuso stated.

At a press conference on Monday, Gattuso elaborated on Chiesa’s situation, emphasizing the importance of respecting the player’s decisions. “I often talk to him. We understand each other’s perspectives, and I must respect what he communicates to me,” he noted. When pressed further, Gattuso confirmed that the decision was indeed made by Chiesa himself, reiterating, “Yes, this marks the fourth or fifth time I’ve explained this.”

Chiesa’s last appearance for Italy was during Euro 2024, where the team faced a disappointing exit following a 2-0 loss to Switzerland. This defeat drew significant criticism, as it marked Switzerland’s first victory over the Azzurri in over three decades. After the tournament, Chiesa transferred to Liverpool but faced a challenging first season due to injuries. These sustained physical issues might be influencing his current hesitance regarding international play. Nonetheless, Italy still has a chance to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, needing to secure victories in their final two qualifiers while hoping for Norway to drop points.

Chiesa’s time at Liverpool has not been without its challenges, having been linked with a move away from the club last summer. Ultimately, he chose to remain, expressing confidence in his improved physical and mental state this season. “Last year was particularly difficult, and I didn’t feel I was at the level the coach expected. However, I understood his decisions. This year, I feel significantly better. The coach has recognized this and granted me more opportunities. I’m pleased to have made contributions in the Premier League; that’s what is expected of every player at Liverpool,” he shared with Daily Mail Sport.

“I’m very pleased with my current performance and intend to keep working hard for more opportunities moving forward. I play for a top club, arguably one of the best in the world. Liverpool is known for recruiting top talent, and naturally, competition is fierce. If I was looking to avoid competition, I would have chosen another team. However, I thrive on competition! I aspire to play here, believing that such competition ultimately helps me develop as a player. The coach has entrusted me with chances in the first four games, and I believe I’ve demonstrated my capability to assist the team.”

Chiesa will utilize the upcoming international break to remain in Liverpool and continue training in preparation for their next Premier League match against Nottingham Forest. While it remains uncertain when or if he will return to play for Italy, the prospect of a spot in next year’s tournament hosted in the United States, Mexico, and Canada may influence his decision.
