Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Crystal Palace in their Premier League encounter in October.

To alleviate fixture congestion, the Premier League has announced a rescheduling of matches involving Arsenal and Crystal Palace in December. Arsenal’s away game against Everton and Crystal Palace’s match at Leeds, originally slated for 14:00 GMT on Sunday, December 21, will now take place at 20:00 on Saturday, December 20.

This change allows both teams an additional day to prepare for their EFL Cup quarter-final scheduled for December 23. The EFL previously adjusted the cup game from its original date of December 16 to avoid a situation where Crystal Palace, competing in the Conference League, would be required to play three matches within five days.

Despite this adjustment, Palace will still face a demanding schedule, with their Conference League match against Finnish club KuPS on Thursday, December 18. The club’s request to move the European fixture to an earlier date was denied by UEFA, citing concerns over the integrity of the competition.

Arsenal also considered a proposal to hold the EFL Cup tie on Christmas Eve but opted against it due to potential disruptions for fans and club staff. They announced plans to provide subsidized coach travel at a cost of £10 for supporters traveling to Merseyside on December 20.

The decision to reschedule the Premier League matches was made following requests from both clubs, emphasizing the need for equal recovery time before the EFL Cup match. While television scheduling played a role in this decision, the Premier League has assured that player welfare remains a top priority.

A spokesperson stated, “Player welfare is a priority for the Premier League, and we have therefore granted requests from Arsenal and Crystal Palace to move their respective fixtures. This decision reflects the impact of expanded UEFA competitions on the domestic fixture calendar, which often results in inadequate recovery time for players.”
