Addressing Fireworks in Football Stadiums: A New Perspective

In recent weeks, there has been a noticeable surge in illegal fireworks being set off at football stadiums. Frank van Mosselveld, the director of FC Groningen, calls for a revised approach to addressing this issue.

“I believe it is part of our supporters’ culture,” Van Mosselveld stated in the podcast “De Bestuurskamer.” He reflected on a campaign initiated in 2019, which aimed to eliminate fireworks from the stands within five years. However, he noted, “Since then, I think it has only increased. Safety is always the top priority, but I believe you cannot completely eradicate it from your stadium.”
