The most talked-about subject from Mary Earps’ book and her subsequent interviews centers on Hannah Hampton, who has overtaken Earps to become England’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Euro 2025. After Euro 2022, Hampton was excluded from the England squad by coach Sarina Wiegman due to what the Guardian reported as ‘her behavior and attitude at the team’s camps.’ Earps echoed these sentiments in her book, asserting that “bad behavior” was “rewarded” when Wiegman later reinstated Hampton, despite the England manager stating that the goalkeeper had “sorted out” the “personal issues” causing her initial exclusion.

At the time of her exclusion from the Lionesses’ roster, Hampton was just 21 years old. It appears she took the necessary steps to address her concerns, satisfying Wiegman—an esteemed manager unlikely to tolerate disruptive behavior—and Emma Hayes, who subsequently appointed her as Chelsea’s starting goalkeeper.

Sonia Bompastor, Hayes’ successor, remarked on Hampton’s growth since joining Chelsea, expressing support for her amid the controversy. Bompastor stated, “She’s such a professional athlete and also a good person. We have a really good relationship together… one of them is class – and Hannah is the class one.” Wiegman, Hayes, and Bompastor are all recognized as successful coaches, making it hard to believe any of them would choose Hampton as their primary goalkeeper if she were genuinely disruptive.

When pressed for specifics on Hampton’s alleged “bad behavior,” Earps declined to elaborate, citing that it was not her place to disclose such details. In a recent interview, Hampton elaborated on her admiration for Earps, noting a memorable moment when they stood together to accept the inaugural Women’s Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d’Or ceremony. “It was a lovely moment,” she reflected, acknowledging Earps’ efforts for women’s football.

This contrast in their remarks has driven fans to rally in support of Hampton online, particularly following the Lionesses’ triumph at Euro 2025. However, the timing of Earps’ comments has drawn criticism, as it seems bitter for her to speak publicly about Hampton shortly after losing her position as England’s No.1.

Earps’ recollection of her retirement from international football has also faced scrutiny, as many perceived it as a selfish decision that left England with a limited goalkeeping pool heading into the Euros. She stated, “I’d like to graciously step aside… I’d rather Khiara [Keating] get the experience,” leaving the untested goalkeeper in a challenging position just before the tournament.

While Earps expressed her desire to step down, it is evident that she had different expectations of her role within the team. Reflecting on Wiegman’s decision to prioritize Hampton, Earps’ choice to retire raises questions about her commitment to supporting her teammates.

The poignant irony lies in how Earps speaks of Wiegman in her book. Wiegman played a pivotal role in Earps’ career revival, giving her the opportunity to shine as a Lionesses icon. Yet, Earps expressed skepticism about Wiegman’s decision-making, stating, “That sounded like bullsh*t to me,” regarding the timing of the choice to elevate Hampton.

Bompastor, while defending Hampton, also felt compelled to advocate for Wiegman, emphasizing the importance of respect for coaches who have achieved significant success. “It’s not acceptable not to show respect to your teammate or your manager,” she asserted.

Earps’ criticism, coupled with her deteriorating relationship with Hampton and her questionable timing, threatens to overshadow her otherwise impactful narrative. In her book, Earps also touches upon various personal struggles, including her journey towards mental health and body image issues, which resonate powerfully with many.

As Earps prepares for her return to Manchester United, where she had a notable impact, the reception she receives may be influenced by her recent comments. Despite her previous popularity, social media has been rife with disappointment and anger from fans who feel her remarks were unwarranted and poorly timed. As Earps steps back onto the pitch, it remains to be seen how her legacy will be affected by this ongoing drama.
