Augsburg Captain Suffers Setback with Knee InjuryAugsburg Captain Suffers Setback with Knee Injury

Augsburg captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, aged 34, participated in the club’s first four Bundesliga matches of the season. Unfortunately, he sustained a torn medial ligament in his left knee during a 4-1 defeat to Mainz on Matchday 4, which ruled him out for the next six games.

Gouweleeuw made his comeback over the weekend, playing 28 minutes in Augsburg’s 3-2 loss against Stuttgart. However, subsequent developments have brought disappointing news. He missed training on Tuesday due to renewed pain in his knee. Augsburg has now confirmed that he has incurred another medial ligament injury, which will necessitate surgery, sidelining the team’s captain for the foreseeable future.

According to Kicker, it is highly unlikely that Gouweleeuw will return to play before 2025. This is a significant setback for Sandro Wagner’s squad, which currently sits 15th in the league, tied on points (7) with St. Pauli, who are in the relegation playoff position after 10 matches, with only two victories in the 2025/26 Bundesliga season.
