Fidalgo s Prospects for the Mexican National TeamFidalgo s Prospects for the Mexican National Team

Fidalgo’s journey toward joining the Mexican national team is beginning to take shape. After months of speculation, coach Javier Aguirre confirmed his intention to consider the Club América midfielder for future call-ups, starting with the FIFA window in March 2026, when Fidalgo will officially be eligible.

“If he’s legally Mexican and meets all the requirements, I have no reason to close the door on him—or anyone else,” Aguirre stated in an interview with TV Azteca, referencing the 28-year-old Spaniard’s pending eligibility status.

Fidalgo has been integral to Club América’s recent success under manager André Jardine, contributing to multiple titles and establishing himself as one of Liga MX’s most technically gifted midfielders. His outstanding performances have drawn the attention of the Mexican Football Federation, which sees him as a potential asset ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Aguirre likened Fidalgo’s situation to that of players who received late call-ups in previous World Cup tournaments. “In every World Cup cycle, there’s always someone who rises at the end. If he’s playing well, has the talent, and is Mexican—then he’s in,” the coach remarked.

Should he be selected, Fidalgo would join Germán Berterame and Julián Quiñones as naturalized players currently involved with Mexico’s national team. However, he will face stiff competition for a midfield position, with notable players such as Edson Álvarez, Erik Lira, Orbelín Pineda, Érick Sánchez, Fidel Ambriz, Obed Vargas, Gilberto Mora, and Marcel Ruiz also vying for spots.

According to TUDN, Fidalgo is expected to participate in training with El Tri during a minicamp in Central America in January, potentially making his official debut in March when Mexico hosts a friendly against Portugal at the reopened Estadio Azteca.

Several national team players have already expressed their support for Fidalgo’s inclusion. “Competing with outstanding players like Fidalgo benefits us all,” said Seattle Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas, while Fidel Ambriz noted, “If he comes to contribute, he’ll be one more Mexican on the team.”
