Update on Andrea Medina Following Injury IncidentUpdate on Andrea Medina Following Injury Incident

Andrea Medina was involved in a distressing collision with Italy international Barbara Bonansea during a recent match. Following the incident, she collapsed on the pitch and remained motionless as medical personnel rushed to her aid. After receiving treatment on-site, the Spain U23 international defender was carried off on a stretcher and subsequently transported to the hospital.

Jacqui Oatley, an experienced broadcaster covering the game for Disney+, shared her concern on social media, stating: “This is horrendous. We’ve just commentated on Atletico Madrid’s @UWCL game against Juventus, and young Spanish left back Andrea Medina suddenly went down – she received urgent, lengthy treatment before being carried off. We wish her all the very best and hope she’s OK.”

Despite the seriousness of Medina’s injury, the match continued, with 10 minutes of stoppage time added. Atletico Madrid ultimately lost the game 2-1, with Emma Stolen Godo and Bonansea scoring the decisive goals for Juventus.

This defeat has resulted in Atletico’s drop to 10th place in the Champions League standings, coinciding with the introduction of a league phase for the women’s competition, while Juventus has climbed to eighth.

Post-match discussions understandably centered around Medina’s condition. Atletico Madrid confirmed via their social media channels that she had suffered a serious blow to the head, necessitating further examination and treatment.

The club stated: “Andrea Medina was replaced after suffering a traumatic brain injury. The footballer is doing well but has been transferred to a hospital center to undergo additional tests.”

Atletico’s head coach, Carmen Menayo, provided an encouraging update when speaking to reporters: “I think she’s doing well, she’s in the hospital, and she has to undergo tests, but I believe she’s doing fine. That’s the most important thing of all.”

Medina has been a vital part of Atletico Madrid’s Champions League campaign, featuring in all three of their matches this season, including scoring during a dominant 6-0 victory over St Polten. She has represented Spain at every youth level from U16 to U23, winning two U19 European Championships and the U20 World Cup, and she aspires to earn senior international recognition in the near future.
