David Raya Commends Talents of Yamal and DowmanDavid Raya Commends Talents of Yamal and Dowman

Lamine Yamal and Max Dowman share an essential quality, according to Spain and Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya: the ability to play football as if they were still in school.

Yamal, 18, and Dowman, 15, represent two of the most promising wingers in the world, although they are at different stages in their careers. Yamal was a runner-up for the Ballon d’Or this year and serves as a pivotal player for both his club and national team. In contrast, Dowman has made only five senior appearances for Arsenal but is already regarded as a player with immense potential.

In an exclusive interview with ESPN, Raya refrained from comparing the two players’ abilities directly but did note some striking similarities in their approach to the game. “I would never compare two players, especially ones of such quality. They are both unique in their own right,” Raya stated. “However, they share a common trait: when they step onto the pitch, they do so with joy. They play with smiles on their faces, giving the impression that they are enjoying a game at school.

“They enter the field to play and have fun. While their competitive spirit is evident as they strive to help the team, the naturalness with which they play at such a high level is truly remarkable.”

Raya also commended Dowman’s ability at such a young age, highlighting his maturity on the pitch. “He’s just 15, turning 16 at the end of the year,” he remarked. “His talent is incredible. While we don’t have much interaction in the dressing room due to regulations, the maturity he displays on the pitch, along with his eagerness to enjoy the game and take on opponents, always with a smile, is impressive.

“We have been following his progress since he was just 14 years old, and I am genuinely impressed by his capabilities as a player.”

Regarding his own career, Raya has become an integral part of Arsenal’s defensive lineup since joining the club in 2023. He addressed rumors surrounding a potential transfer to Real Madrid, particularly following Thibaut Courtois’ ACL injury, clarifying, “I am aware of the speculation, but at the moment Courtois was injured, I was already undergoing a medical examination with Arsenal. Therefore, it would have been highly challenging for me to leave for Madrid. I believe there were rumors, but I have no concrete information about them.

“The only contact I received from Madrid was during my own serious knee injury. I truly appreciated their gesture as they sent me a letter wishing me a speedy recovery and conveying their support. It was a kind act on their part, and I am grateful for it.”
