Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s tenure at Bayern Munich was marked by early promise yet ultimately became a frustrating chapter in his career, characterized by limited opportunities at a club filled with star talent. Joined from Brøndby in 2012, he made history by becoming the youngest player to debut for Bayern in the Bundesliga in 2013. Although highly regarded by coach Pep Guardiola, Hojbjerg found it challenging to secure a place in the competitive midfield rotation dominated by experienced players such as Xabi Alonso and Bastian Schweinsteiger. To gain essential first-team experience, he spent time on loan at Augsburg and Schalke before departing the club permanently in 2016 to join Southampton. Hojbjerg expressed that while Bayern was an invaluable learning environment, he required regular playing time for his development. He left the club after making only 25 senior appearances across all competitions. Reflecting on his time at Bayern, he has expressed particular admiration for Manuel Neuer.

In an interview with Bild, Hojbjerg recounted, “During my early days at Bayern, the older players were not harsh, but I learned a great deal from them. I recall a training session where we played eleven against eleven, and Manuel Neuer, positioned behind me, was quite direct and strict. The following weekend, after I came on as a substitute, he approached me in the dressing room, put his arm around my shoulder, and said: ‘You know what? Everything’s great. Well done.’ I felt that this gesture made a significant difference. This taught me the importance of showing care for others while also recognizing the necessity of taking action oneself.”

Hojbjerg also briefly spoke of former Germany captain Philipp Lahm, stating, “He was somewhat unconventional. Rarely vocal, he possessed a unique charisma that defined him as an exceptional captain.”

After leaving Bayern for Southampton, Hojbjerg transitioned to Tottenham in 2020 and was subsequently loaned to Marseille last season. He joined the French side on a permanent basis over the summer, where he became teammates with Mason Greenwood. The former Spurs player shared insights about Greenwood, who departed Manchester United under controversial circumstances. Hojbjerg remarked to RMC Sport, “Mason is already showcasing his talent with Marseille, and he performed well. However, it is crucial for him to maintain his work ethic. I prefer not to speak too much about Mason, as he has numerous qualities. I want him to stay focused and continue his good work, as we all understand his importance to the team. He is well-liked in the locker room, and regardless of whether he scores, he must consistently contribute and approach every day with seriousness.”

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich is reportedly considering a contract extension for veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, which would allow him to remain at the Allianz Arena until June 2027. The 2014 World Cup-winning goalkeeper has indicated a desire to take his time before making a decision about his future, with the club planning discussions in December. Neuer, now 39, stated, “I am completely relaxed about it. The primary focus is on our team. I have mentioned that my well-being will also play a significant role. I intend to take my time and remain relaxed, especially during the winter. Many factors are at play, including health, fitness, motivation, and the direction the club takes next season. It is too early to provide a definitive answer, but we can always have discussions later. Everything is interconnected.”
