Nick Woltemade’s emergence has been a standout highlight in a challenging World Cup qualification campaign for the German national team, Die Mannschaft. Following a 2-0 defeat to Slovakia in September, both teams have found themselves in a tight contest for the top position in Group A. A goalless first half in Luxembourg could have shifted the momentum back to Slovakia after their victory over Northern Ireland.

However, the towering forward’s two goals helped Germany ascend to the top of the group on goal difference ahead of Slovakia’s visit to Leipzig on Monday. Woltemade opened the scoring in the 49th minute with a well-placed shot from a Leroy Sané cross, and he doubled the lead twenty minutes later with a decisive finish from Ridle Baku’s assist.

Despite some nerves within the team, Woltemade expressed confidence in his goal-scoring abilities, even during matches where he may not be heavily involved or when service from teammates is limited.

In his post-match comments, Woltemade stated, “I’ve developed great confidence in my abilities and a really good feeling that I know: no matter how the game goes, I can still score a goal.” He acknowledged that he was “served very well” for both of his goals, emphasizing the support he received.

The 23-year-old forward conveyed his happiness in scoring crucial goals for his national team, noting, “It feels good to score goals, and these two were very important.” He also confidently addressed competition for the forward position, downplaying concerns about the return of injured players like Kai Havertz, Niclas Füllkrug, or Tim Kleindienst. “No, honestly, not really,” he said.

Woltemade’s success fuels his anticipation for next summer’s World Cup, which he described as “the biggest tournament in the world, a dream for everyone to play in. That would be number one.”

Moreover, he mentioned his intention to gift his match-worn shirt to his sister, stating, “My sister already wrote to me that she’s really keen on the long-sleeved jersey; that’s probably why I’m going to Bremen.”

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann praised his young striker after the match, commending Woltemade’s relentless work ethic and recognizing his importance to the national squad as Germany prepares for the World Cup. “Nick deserves special praise for his work ethic,” Nagelsmann noted. “He covered a tremendous amount of ground; he’s really good and important for us.”

While Nagelsmann evaluates his striker’s contributions beyond just goal-scoring, the 23-year-old’s knack for finding the net has undeniably bolstered his standing within the team.

Since Miroslav Klose’s retirement after the 2014 World Cup, the German national team has struggled to fill the void of a reliable striker. Numerous candidates have attempted to secure the number 9 position, with previous managers often resorting to deploying additional midfielders or makeshift forwards like Havertz.

With three vital goals in his last two appearances, including the decisive goal in a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Northern Ireland in October, Woltemade is positioning himself as a potential savior for a national side that has faced disappointments in recent tournaments. His unwavering confidence will undoubtedly aid the Newcastle star as he advances in his international career.

He will have another opportunity to demonstrate his skills in Leipzig on Monday, when Germany takes on Slovakia. A draw will suffice for Die Mannschaft to secure automatic qualification for next summer’s World Cup, as they currently lead Group A on goal difference.
