Lee Carsley, the England U21 manager, provided opportunities for promising players Gittens and Chelsea’s Tyrique George in their recent match against Ireland. George capped off his performance with a late goal, while Gittens was instrumental in the action during the first half, winning a penalty after skillfully navigating through defenders. However, Divin Mubama, currently on loan at Stoke City from Manchester City, saw his penalty attempt thwarted by the Irish goalkeeper. Later, former Chelsea academy player Lewis Hall created another penalty opportunity, which Mubama successfully converted, giving England a well-deserved lead.

Gittens faced a challenging moment when he fell heavily after what appeared to be a foul in the box, but his subsequent appeals for a penalty were dismissed. He stood up gingerly, clearly impacted by the challenge, and signaled to the bench that he could no longer continue. When Fulham’s Josh King came on to replace him, Gittens appeared troubled, clutching his thigh as he left the field. Enzo Maresca, already concerned about a growing injury list, feared the worst. However, according to Sun Sport, Gittens reported no ongoing issues during a later assessment and is set to travel with Carsley’s squad for the upcoming Euro U21 qualifier in Slovakia.

The Chelsea squad has been grappling with a series of injuries. Pedro Neto had to withdraw from Portugal duty due to a groin injury sustained shortly after scoring against Wolves, while Cole Palmer is expected to miss several upcoming matches as he recovers. Additionally, Mykhailo Mudryk remains sidelined due to a provisional suspension following a positive doping test last year. This extensive injury list has made Gittens’ potential absence particularly concerning for Maresca.

Gittens is beginning to find his footing in the Premier League, and former Chelsea forward Florent Malouda expressed confidence in his development. “It’s a learning process,” Malouda remarked in an interview with The Athletic. “Joining a club like Chelsea at a young age requires building confidence, which is part of the journey. Gittens possesses the talent; it’s about performing consistently at this level. To succeed, young players must be fearless. The club has faith in him, and he needs to demonstrate that he belongs here. A single goal or assist can change everything, and he has the potential to energize the stadium with his performance.”

In another notable performance, Alejandro Garnacho has also been finding his rhythm in attack. He started against Wolves and showcased one of his most mature displays to date. Maresca praised Garnacho’s work ethic, particularly his performance off the ball, emphasizing the evolution he has undergone since transferring from a club that did not uphold high training standards. “Garnacho had a fantastic game both with and without the ball,” Maresca stated. “He is gradually improving physically, and we are pleased with his progress. Playing well on and off the ball is essential to our style, and he is adapting well to our demands.”
