Arda Guler The Rising Star Transforming Real Madrid s AttackArda Guler The Rising Star Transforming Real Madrid s Attack

Arda Guler first emerged as a teenage prodigy in Turkey, attracting significant interest from top clubs, particularly Barcelona and Arsenal. The Blaugrana sought a player of his creative caliber, believing he could evolve into a star alongside their homegrown talents.

In early 2023, Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, publicly indicated that a deal for Guler was nearly finalized, contingent on his arrival at the start of the next season. Laporta stated, “Today [Barca sporting director] Deco was in Istanbul. La Liga permits us to conduct operations for the upcoming season without affecting our ‘Financial Fair Play’ status. Arda Guler is an exceptionally talented player that Deco admires, and we are working to finalize the transaction.”

However, Real Madrid soon intervened, claiming they had been tracking Guler for months before Barcelona’s interest. The Madrid club proposed an initial €20 million offer, potentially rising to €30 million with add-ons, assuring Guler immediate first-team opportunities. In a characteristic response, Laporta asserted that signing Guler would have been a significant error: “We decided against pursuing Guler due to the escalating nature of the operation, believing it would be a misstep on our part. There are alternative players we can acquire without engaging in a bidding war.”

Upon his arrival in Madrid, Guler’s talent was evident, yet his physical development presented challenges. A quick injury sidelined him for months before making his debut in January 2024. Despite a promising performance, coach Carlo Ancelotti expressed doubts regarding his readiness: “He performed well for an hour, but physically he is not at his peak. It’s crucial for him to acclimate to the team and display his quality.”

Guler faced competition for playing time, often overshadowed by Luka Modric and the rising star Jude Bellingham. Nonetheless, he managed to score six goals in his last seven La Liga matches of the season, although Ancelotti continued to limit his starting opportunities.

In contrast, Xabi Alonso, the new manager, has integrated Guler into the team from the outset, showcasing faith in his abilities. Guler played a pivotal role in the Club World Cup, starting every match and contributing significantly.

During the 2025-26 season, Guler has started in 14 of Madrid’s 16 games, amassing three goals and six assists. His impressive average of 0.91 goal contributions per 90 minutes places him in the 98th percentile in La Liga, while his 40 chances created lead all players in Europe’s top leagues.

Alonso has encouraged Guler to enhance his defensive game, and statistical improvements indicate progress in this area. His interceptions per 90 minutes rank in the 74th percentile for attacking midfielders, while his tackles won position him in the 84th percentile. While these metrics may not be elite, they are commendable, especially for a team that prioritizes maintaining possession and regaining the ball quickly.

Guler’s synergy with Kylian Mbappe has been instrumental, with all six of Guler’s assists this season directed towards the Frenchman. Guler remarked on their mutual understanding, drawing parallels to the successful partnership between Cristiano Ronaldo and Mesut Ozil. Guler stated, “While comparisons are flattering, success comes from teamwork.”

This connection has allowed Mbappe to maintain a more central position, leading to a more balanced attack under Alonso’s management compared to Ancelotti’s tenure.

Despite the positive dynamics, challenges remain within a squad abundant with star talent. Alonso must navigate maintaining harmony among players, including Bellingham, who has returned to form after injury. Their compatibility on the pitch raises concerns that must be addressed, especially if Alonso opts for a three-man front.

Potential adjustments, such as transitioning Guler into a deeper role akin to Toni Kroos, have been discussed. Kroos himself acknowledged Guler’s talent while clarifying their differences in playing style: “I appreciate Guler’s increased playing time, which he deserves, as he is capable of making a significant impact for Real Madrid in the future.”

Ultimately, Alonso’s high regard for Guler suggests that as long as he continues to facilitate opportunities for Mbappe, he will remain an integral part of Real Madrid’s future.
