Assessing the U.S. Men’s National Team’s World Cup Prospects

Tom Hindle remarked on the immense talent of Gio Reyna, often touted as the most gifted player in the United States after Christian Pulisic. Despite struggling across three clubs in recent years, Reyna showcased flashes of his potential in a recent match against Paraguay. If he can maintain his fitness, he deserves a starting position in the World Cup, although that remains a significant uncertainty.

Ryan Tolmich agreed, noting that Reyna’s ability to impact the game, even at less than his best, strengthens his case for inclusion in the 26-man roster, particularly if he can serve as an emergency substitute. However, his fitness remains a crucial factor in determining his role.

Hindle speculated on the competition for spots on the team, suggesting that if Alejandro Zendejas is not being considered, the choice will come down to either Brenden Aaronson or Diego Luna. With Pochettino’s evident preference for Luna, Aaronson may find himself left out unless he can impress in upcoming matches with Leeds.

Tolmich highlighted that key attacking midfielders, including Christian Pulisic, Malik Tillman, and Weston McKennie, are already secured for the roster, leaving Reyna, Aaronson, Luna, and Zendejas vying for limited spots. Ultimately, player form and fit will dictate the final selections.

Regarding defender Joe Scally, Hindle acknowledged that while he may not be a starting-level center back, his versatility makes him a valuable asset for the U.S. setup. Scally’s ability to provide cover in multiple positions bolsters his case for inclusion, even if his starting status is debatable.

Tolmich expressed optimism about Scally’s potential contribution, describing him as an essential utility player for the World Cup squad, capable of starting or serving as a defensive substitute. A few more strong performances could solidify his position.

Hindle cautioned that victories against teams like Australia and Paraguay should not inflate expectations, as a Round of 16 exit remains likely. While some may compare the U.S. team to Morocco’s surprising success in Qatar 2022, he emphasized the need for realistic expectations given the strength of the Moroccan side.

Tolmich noted that the team dynamics remain somewhat uncertain, as they have yet to perform in a configuration expected for the World Cup. Although the baseline performance may have improved, the team’s ultimate capabilities are still to be determined. The goal remains to advance from the group stage and see what unfolds.

Hindle observed that the recent match saw no disastrous performances, praising the overall display against a competent opponent. However, he hoped for more from Aaronson, who is under pressure to prove his worth.

Tolmich reiterated that the team should feel positive about their performance, despite Aaronson missing opportunities to score. While the defense might be dissatisfied with conceding a goal, they performed admirably otherwise. Ricardo Pepi missed a crucial chance, but he is expected to capitalize on similar opportunities when fully fit. Hindle suggested that the strength of Uruguay’s squad would depend on Marcelo Bielsa’s choices, noting absences like Federico Valverde and Darwin Nunez. If key players are fielded, he predicted a 2-0 defeat for the U.S.; otherwise, a 1-1 draw could be on the cards.

Tolmich concluded that the upcoming match would be considerably tougher, and the U.S. might rotate their lineup. With Mexico managing to draw against Uruguay, he deemed a 1-1 result a reasonable expectation.
