Pogba s Journey Back to Competitive Football with MonacoPogba s Journey Back to Competitive Football with Monaco

Paul Pogba last played in a competitive match in September 2023 while with Juventus in Serie A. Following an 18-month doping ban, reduced from four years, he was forced out of football. Earlier this year, after completing his suspension, Pogba was given a chance for redemption by signing a two-year contract with Monaco, ushering in a new chapter in his career as he strives to regain his best form.

However, the path has not been entirely smooth for the 2018 World Cup-winning midfielder. Returning to full fitness immediately after two years away from the pitch is a monumental challenge. “We must be realistic and honest,” remarked Monaco CEO Thiago Scuro in July, tempering the expectations surrounding Pogba’s comeback.

In an interview with AFP on Monday, Monaco’s head coach, Pocognoli, acknowledged that Pogba is closer than ever to making his debut for the club. Nevertheless, he exercised caution by refraining from providing a specific timeline for his return.

“My communication will remain grounded, reflecting our internal assessments,” Pocognoli stated. “We will evaluate him based on his current contributions. I hope he is close to playing, but I am cautious not to get ahead of myself. It will happen in due course. What I can affirm is that when he is on the field, he appears happy and focused on returning to top form. There is no doubt about that.”

Pocognoli emphasized the commitment of himself and his coaching staff to help Pogba achieve peak physical condition. “My role now is to assist him alongside the staff. If we can bring a smile to his face during professional matches, that would be wonderful. Will this be easy? I cannot say. However, we are dedicated to the task, and Paul has a robust character. I believe that the mind controls many aspects of performance.”

The head coach is also counting on Pogba’s experience and leadership qualities, urging him to mentor the younger players. “In one of my initial meetings, I discussed the importance of the club’s legacy. Leaders like Paul must share their wisdom with the next generation, the fans, and everyone associated with the club,” Pocognoli remarked. “These seasoned players are pivotal in guiding the youth. I need to ensure their success. The more leaders we have, the more the pressure can be distributed. If Paul is utilized effectively, the team can greatly benefit from his influence.”

Monaco has implemented a detailed three-month rehabilitation program designed to help Pogba readjust to the intensity of competing in a top five European league. “We anticipate a three-month rehabilitation process,” Scuro elaborated in July. “High-level sport may appear effortless on television, but the required intensity is immense. Monaco is among the most intense teams in Ligue 1 and Europe, so our players must maintain high fitness levels on the pitch. Our responsibility is to equip him with the necessary tools to succeed.”

There was optimism in October, as it was believed that Pogba would be included in the squad for the match against Angers on October 18, following the international break. Unfortunately, a minor injury prior to the game extended his wait.

Leading up to the most recent international break, Pocognoli hinted that Pogba might finally be ready for inclusion in the squad against Paris FC. However, both fans and the coach were disappointed when Pogba suffered a minor grade two ankle sprain during training just two days before the match.

There remains cautious optimism regarding Pogba’s availability for Saturday’s Ligue 1 clash against Rennes. The 32-year-old participated in team training on Friday without any relapses, and if he does make his debut this weekend, it will be 26 months since his last competitive appearance.
