Sarina Wiegman’s coaching record with the Lionesses showcases her ability to make significant decisions, as evidenced by back-to-back European Championship victories and a 2023 World Cup final appearance.

However, she has faced criticism, particularly from former England goalkeeper Mary Earps in her book, “All In: Football, Life and Learning to be Unapologetically Me.” Earps, who contributed to the team’s 2022 continental success, accused Wiegman of “rewarding bad behaviour” by recalling previously excluded goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.

Hampton subsequently surpassed Earps to become the Lionesses’ first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Euro 2025, leading to Earps’ announcement of her international retirement. Earps observed from a distance as her successor excelled and secured penalty shootout heroics, contributing to the team’s ultimate triumph.

In response to Earps’ comments, Wiegman stated, “We have conversations with different players all the time. My reality and someone else’s can differ because individual experiences vary. My aim is to foster an environment where clarity and open dialogue prevail.

“I make decisions to win. I have consistently stated that we have two outstanding goalkeepers, and my choice reflects that.”

Wiegman acknowledged that she has not spoken with Earps since the book’s release, asserting there was nothing further to discuss. She emphasized that she cannot control others’ behaviors and would make the same choices again if given the chance.

Discussing the necessity of sometimes unpopular decisions, she remarked, “The competition has been intense. Our goalkeeping unit is strong, with both goalkeepers vying for the top position. I stand by my decisions, and I don’t believe I would have acted differently in the broader context.

“I maintain confidentiality in individual conversations to build trust. This encourages players to engage with me, cultivating an environment where everyone can express themselves, which ultimately strengthens our team on and off the field.”

Wiegman does not foresee any divisions within the squad due to Earps’ revelations, stating that the current England camp shares a unified direction.

“Team dynamics are always evolving. Working with diverse individuals means ongoing conversations about various topics. I strive to keep my door open for discussions whenever needed, and I welcome opportunities to challenge players as required.

Wiegman concluded that she enjoyed her collaboration with Earps, reflecting on their shared experiences. The Lionesses’ focus now turns to upcoming friendlies against China at Wembley and Ghana at St Mary’s, with 25 players selected for these matches, marking the end of another remarkable and eventful year for the team. Notably, Chelsea goalkeeper Hampton will miss these fixtures due to injury.
