Viktor Gyokeres joined Arsenal with the reputation of a late bloomer. Although he was contracted to Brighton from 2017 to 2021, he never made an appearance in the Premier League. Instead, he revitalized his career with two impressive seasons at Coventry, followed by a successful stint in Portugal with Sporting. Feeling he had outgrown Lisbon, Gyokeres sought a transfer to the Emirates. However, the protracted nature of the deal left him struggling with his physical conditioning. His debut occurred under sweltering conditions in Hong Kong during a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham, where he appeared to lack rhythm and sharpness. Social media quickly highlighted concerns regarding his fitness, with some suggesting he looked “a little heavy,” raising questions about his pre-season preparation.

Just as Gyokeres seemed to be acclimating to his new environment, misfortune struck. During Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor, where he opened the scoring, he signaled discomfort and was substituted at half-time. Manager Mikel Arteta expressed evident concern in his post-match comments. “I am worried because he hasn’t had many muscular issues, and he needed to leave the pitch feeling something. That’s never a good sign, especially for a player with his explosiveness. We are investigating further to understand the injury, and we will provide updates as soon as we have more information.”

Former Arsenal player Stefan Schwarz believes Gyokeres’ challenges stem not only from physical issues but also from mental and tactical adjustments. “I believe Viktor Gyokeres is not fully fit yet,” he stated in an interview with Hajper. “The new system, manager, and teammates require time to develop understanding; it’s not just about physical fitness but also mental adaptation. Mental fatigue may arise from adjusting to new expectations from fans worldwide. However, I see a promising partnership with Arsenal, which could benefit both Gyokeres and the Swedish national team.”

Despite the initial criticism, Schwarz remains hopeful that Arsenal’s environment will foster Gyokeres’ development. “He’s in a strong team that competes for significant titles, and he could help lead the team forward. Every player is a vital piece of the puzzle, and Gyokeres has a formidable physical presence and finishing ability with both feet. However, he must improve his fitness. I believe he is in the right team under Mikel Arteta, surrounded by excellent players. Arsenal’s depth means Gyokeres may not play every match, but they have numerous tactical options depending on the opponent and the game’s situation.”

Schwarz candidly assessed that Gyokeres needs to shed some weight to succeed in the Premier League. “Sometimes, the loudest barker isn’t the strongest. The players in the Premier League are generally more powerful and faster. Strikers are always expected to score goals. Hopefully, Gyokeres will soon begin to score and create opportunities, which will help him get into better shape, as he currently is a heavier player.”

“He didn’t have a proper pre-season, and participating in games is crucial. Those six weeks allow players to bond and understand each other’s movements. When a midfielder makes a pass, there should be an instinctual understanding of where it will go. This relationship takes time to develop, and football is about fine margins. Just look at Dennis Bergkamp; he was exceptional at that. Gyokeres will learn and score many goals, benefiting Arsenal in the long run.”

Arsenal’s first match after the international break is a high-stakes north London derby against Tottenham at the Emirates on November 23. The club hopes Gyokeres’ injury is not severe enough to sideline him for this crucial fixture. He may not be the only player racing to return, as Arsenal is also monitoring the recoveries of Noni Madueke, Kai Havertz, and captain Martin Ødegaard, all of whom could be fit in time for the clash with Spurs.
