Celebrating a Millennium: The Legacy of Gipuzkoa

omidbasir- In the year 1,025, the residents of Gipuzkoa had long established a community defined by their customs and values. However, this particular year marked a significant milestone at the iconic Church of Salvador de Olazábal, located in the charming area of Tolosaldea. Here, a document was discovered that contained the earliest known written reference to our beloved land: Ipuskoa (Ipuscua).

This intriguing finding sparked the birth of an identity that has shaped the character and endeavors of the region, Gipuzkoa, which now has ample reasons to celebrate this millennium. The Real Sociedad has also chosen to participate in this remarkable anniversary, and for this reason, the landscape of Altzo has been selected as the central image for the 2025-26 commemorative poster.

Since 2010, Gipuzkoa has been featured prominently in this official imagery across numerous editions. Highlights have included Mount Txindoki, the Flysch cliffs between Mutriku, Deba, and Zumaia, the beech forest of Oianleku, the Aranaga quarry, Getaria, Zarautz, the Miramar Palace, Beasain, Peñas de Aia, Hondarribia, San Sebastián, and last year’s tribute to Azkoitia on its 700th anniversary. This year, more than ever, our region deserves this acknowledgment of its origins.

The Real Sociedad has thus unveiled its poster for the 2025-26 season, which is highly anticipated by fans. This time, the backdrop features the town of Altzo, coinciding with the 1,000-year anniversary of the discovery of the first written reference to the province of Gipuzkoa, then known as Ipuskoa (Ipuscua).

The poster is now available for digital download on the Real Sociedad’s website, while physical copies can be requested on the 30th at Gate 2B of Anoeta. This coincides with the visit of Villarreal CF at 14:00 hours, starting two hours prior. All members, shareholders, or RS Fans will receive a poster for both the men’s and women’s teams as a complimentary gift.
