Haiti Secures World Cup Spot Amidst UnrestHaiti Secures World Cup Spot Amidst Unrest

Haiti has officially secured its place in next summer’s World Cup with a decisive 2-0 victory over Nicaragua on Tuesday. However, their French coach, Sebastien Migne, has been unable to travel to the island due to the ongoing civil unrest.

Currently, Haiti is forced to conduct their matches 500 miles away in Curacao. This victory caps off a surprising qualifying campaign during which they emerged victorious in Group C, surpassing pre-tournament favorites Honduras and Costa Rica.

This will mark Haiti’s first World Cup appearance in 52 years, the last being in the 1974 tournament held in West Germany.

Potential travelers are cautioned against visiting Haiti due to prevalent violence and civil unrest that has persisted since the devastating earthquake in 2010.

The Haitian squad is led by Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, a France-born midfielder playing for Wolves, and consists entirely of players based abroad.

Migne expressed his concerns, stating, “It’s impossible [to visit] because it’s too dangerous. I usually live in the countries where I work, but I can’t here. There are no more international flights landing there,” in an interview with France Football magazine.

Haiti is also looking to include in-form Sunderland striker Wilson Isidor in their squad. Isidor commented on his aspirations, stating, “I would like to set myself the goal of going to the World Cup; it will always remain a dream. I have two options: France and Haiti. Haiti has already approached me, but I haven’t made a decision yet. I’m currently focused on my club. In the French national team, I know the guys; I’ve played with them and against them.”
