Brazil’s 2025 campaign ended on a somber note as they were held to a 1-1 draw by a determined Tunisia team, marking Carlo Ancelotti’s second draw as head coach of the Selecao. The five-time world champions squandered numerous opportunities throughout the match, notably an early effort from Rodrygo that was cleared off the line. Tunisia shocked the crowd by taking the lead in the 23rd minute, thanks to Hazem Mastouri.

Brazil responded with near misses from Casemiro and Vinicius Junior before Estevao equalized with a penalty in the 44th minute. Another penalty was awarded to Brazil in the 78th minute after Ferjani Sassi fouled Vitor Roque. Estevao, who had successfully converted the first penalty, was instructed not to take the second kick, which Lucas Paquetá ultimately missed by firing over the crossbar.

In the post-match conference, Ancelotti explained his decision to replace Estevao with Paquetá for the second penalty, stating, “Paquetá was the designated penalty taker. For the second penalty, I opted for Paquetá to relieve some pressure from Estevao, as he typically converts them well.”

When asked to analyze Brazil’s performance, Ancelotti remarked, “Certainly, many players were involved. A few are currently unavailable, but the roster is nearly complete. There are two friendlies remaining, and with six months until the World Cup, anything can happen. The schedule is demanding, and the risk of injury is significant. However, the team culture and atmosphere are conducive for achieving peak performance at the World Cup.”

He expressed his confidence in the team, highlighting their professionalism and patriotism: “I have great faith in this team and its players, especially in this positive environment. The players show a deep affection for the national jersey, which is crucial.”

Brazil is set to play two more friendlies during the March international break before heading to North America for the 2026 World Cup. Ancelotti shared his message to the squad regarding the upcoming international break: “I communicated with the players, wishing them well for their upcoming matches. We will continue to monitor them, maintain open communication until March and the World Cup. This observation process will be vital.”

Estevao, who has made a strong impact at Chelsea, scored in both friendly matches the Selecao played in November and is expected to play a key role in Ancelotti’s World Cup squad next summer. Tunisia’s coach, Samsi Trabelsi, praised the talented 18-year-old as a ‘football genius’ before Tuesday’s match, asserting his potential to become one of the best players of his generation. “He is emerging as a new football genius, very young. If he continues to perform well and wins titles with his club or national team, he could even contend for the Ballon d’Or in the coming years. His skill and creativity are rare at this level.”
