Birmingham City Football Club has proudly revealed its plans for a new stadium, the Birmingham City Powerhouse, which will boast a capacity of 62,000. This ambitious project is the centerpiece of a multi-billion-pound redevelopment initiative in the city.

Located in Bordesley Green, the stadium will be visible from up to 40 miles away and is envisioned as a “beacon for excellence for Birmingham,” as articulated by club chairman Tom Wagner during the launch event on Thursday.

The design features twelve distinctive chimneys that not only pay homage to the brickworks that once occupied the site but also provide structural support for the roof. One of the towers will include a lift to a bar that offers panoramic views of the city.

The stadium’s innovative design incorporates a retractable roof and a moveable pitch, allowing it to host a variety of sporting and entertainment events. Wagner emphasized that the design draws inspiration from the proud industrial heritage of the West Midlands, which is characterized by ingenuity and growth.

Further enhancing the match-day experience, the stadium will include a steep bowl design complemented by markets, cafes, restaurants, and play areas within the venue.

As the club celebrates its 150th anniversary, it aims to complete the stadium by the start of the 2030/2031 football season. The unveiling featured appearances by former player Jude Bellingham and Arthur Shelby from Peaky Blinders, showcased in a film produced at Blues fan Steven Knight’s Digbeth Loc film studios.

This new stadium will serve as the anchor for the upcoming Sports Quarter, spearheaded by Wagner, co-founder of Knighthead Capital Management. In 2024, the club acquired the 48-acre former Birmingham Wheels motorsport site in Bordesley, which will also include provisions for housing, hotels, recreational facilities, and green spaces.

In June, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced a £2.4 billion investment to improve transport links in the West Midlands, with the Sports Quarter positioned as a central element of this masterplan. Wagner is projected to invest up to £3 billion in the project, which is expected to generate thousands of jobs.

Wagner remarked, “This is a significant milestone for Birmingham City Football Club, creating a home that reflects our aspirations to compete at the highest level.” He further asserted that the stadium’s iconic design represents a statement of intent for Birmingham and the West Midlands, showcasing a region that is on the rise.

Thomas Heatherwick, founder and design director of Heatherwick Studio, which is developing the stadium, expressed his desire to encapsulate the essence of Birmingham. “Often, stadiums resemble sterile spaceships. This stadium will grow organically from the very fabric of Birmingham itself—its brickworks, its myriad trades, and the craftsmanship at its core. It will be a vibrant community hub, bringing life where it meets the ground—a space for play, gathering, and everyday life.”
