Rashford s Fitness in Question Ahead of Barcelona s Match Against Athletic ClubRashford s Fitness in Question Ahead of Barcelona s Match Against Athletic Club

Marcus Rashford’s availability for Barcelona’s match against Athletic Club at Spotify Camp Nou this weekend is uncertain, as he missed training on Thursday and Friday due to flu symptoms.

Coach Hansi Flick stated that a final decision regarding Rashford will be made closer to the match. “Marcus has a fever, which is why he was unable to train yesterday and today,” Flick confirmed during a press conference on Friday. “There are doubts about whether he will be fit to play tomorrow.”

Since joining Barcelona on loan from Manchester United, Rashford has been a key player, contributing six goals and eight assists while filling in for the injured Raphinha on the left wing.

Fortunately for Barça, Raphinha has returned to training after a two-month absence. Flick expressed satisfaction with Raphinha’s progress, noting that he will participate in the game but likely not as a starter. “The good news is Raphinha is back. I value the impact he has on the team. We’ll see if he can play for 10, 15, or 20 minutes, but it’s a significant step for him to be back on the bench tomorrow,” Flick said.

Flick also provided updates on other players, confirming that Lamine Yamal is managing a groin issue well, and it was a wise decision for him to sit out Spain’s international matches during the break, as the national team secured their spot in next summer’s World Cup.

Goalkeeper Joan García is cleared to return for the match against Athletic, while Frenkie de Jong will miss the game due to suspension. Additionally, Pedri is not yet fit to return, although he might be available for the Champions League match against Chelsea on Tuesday or in the following game.

Saturday’s match against Athletic marks Barcelona’s first game back at Camp Nou since relocating to the Olympic Stadium for renovations in 2023. The renovation is ongoing, with completion expected in 2027, and Saturday’s match will be limited to an attendance of 45,000. Flick expressed excitement about returning to the iconic venue: “We prefer to play at Camp Nou. During open training two weeks ago, I felt an overwhelming sense of joy seeing the fans in the stands and the pitch up close.”

He added that the atmosphere at Camp Nou can provide the team with a crucial boost during the match.

Flick also addressed Lionel Messi’s recent visit to Camp Nou, which sparked rumors of a potential return. “Why not?” he replied when asked if he would like to coach the Argentine superstar. “But ultimately, Messi is the best footballer of the last decade or more. I always enjoy watching him play; it’s remarkable what he does. He would enhance any team, but his contract runs until 2028, and mine concludes in 2027, so it’s not a pressing issue for me.”

With a victory against Athletic on Saturday, Barcelona can temporarily ascend to the top of LaLiga, before current leaders Real Madrid face Elche on Sunday.
