Swansea City has officially announced the appointment of Vitor Matos as their new head coach, signing him to a four-year contract.

Matos, who previously served as the elite development coach at Liverpool, joins the club from Maritimo, a team in the Portuguese second-tier league, where he took on his first senior managerial role just this past June.

This decision follows the recent dismissal of Alan Sheehan earlier this month. After missing out on the opportunity to hire Kim Hellberg, who is heading to Middlesbrough, Swansea turned their attention to Matos as they seek to improve their standing in the Championship.

The 37-year-old was present at Ashton Gate to observe Swansea’s 3-0 loss against Bristol City, which left the team positioned at 20th in the league table.

Tom Gorringe, Swansea’s chief executive, remarked, “We spoke to a range of candidates and Vitor was the clear standout with a cohesive plan for advancing our squad. He has spent over a decade at elite clubs and is regarded as a trusted figure by some of the top coaches in modern football.”

Gorringe further emphasized Matos’ commitment to an attacking style of play and his focus on technical and tactical player development, expressing confidence that fans would enjoy watching his Swansea City team in action.

Following Matos’ appointment, Darren O’Dea, who served as Sheehan’s assistant and took temporary charge last weekend alongside Richard Stearman, will be leaving the club.

The club has stated that they are working closely with Matos to finalize a backroom staff that will provide the necessary support and expertise to maximize his chances of success. Club legend Leon Britton has joined the coaching staff on a short-term basis, and Joe Allen will also assist in the transition.
