Swansea City Appoints Vitor Matos as New Head CoachSwansea City Appoints Vitor Matos as New Head Coach

Swansea City has officially appointed Vitor Matos as their head coach on a four-year contract.

The 37-year-old coach, who previously served as an elite development coach at Liverpool, arrives from Maritimo, a club in the Portuguese second division, where he assumed his first senior managerial position in June of this year.

This appointment follows the recent dismissal of Alan Sheehan. After missing out on Kim Hellberg, who joined Middlesbrough, the Championship club turned to Matos to lead them forward.

Matos was present at Ashton Gate on Saturday, observing Swansea’s 3-0 defeat to Bristol City, which left the team positioned 20th in the league table.

Tom Gorringe, Swansea’s chief executive, commented, “We spoke to a range of candidates, and Vitor was the clear standout with a cohesive plan for advancing our squad. He has spent over a decade at elite clubs and has been a trusted figure among some of the best coaches in modern football.”

Gorringe emphasized Matos’s commitment to an attacking style of play and his focus on the technical and tactical development of players, expressing confidence that fans will enjoy watching Matos’s Swansea City team.

Following Matos’s appointment, Darren O’Dea, who served as interim manager last weekend, alongside fellow coach Richard Stearman, will depart from the club.

In a statement, the club indicated that they are collaborating with Matos to finalize a backroom staff that will provide the necessary support and expertise to maximize his chances of success.

Additionally, club legend Leon Britton has joined the coaching staff on a short-term basis, and Joe Allen will assist during the transition.
