Pep Guardiola has publicly acknowledged feelings of “embarrassment and shame” regarding his interaction with a television cameraman following Manchester City’s defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday.

The incident occurred on the pitch at St James’ Park, where Guardiola appeared to engage in a tense confrontation with the cameraman. Following the 2-1 defeat, he was also seen having animated discussions with referee Samuel Barrott and Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimarães.

During a news conference on Monday, when asked about his remarks to the cameraman, Guardiola confirmed that he had apologized for his actions. “I feel embarrassed, ashamed when I see it,” he stated. “I don’t like it. I apologized immediately to the cameraman. I am who I am. After 1,000 games, I am not a perfect person; I make significant mistakes. It’s not about that. What I can assure you is that I passionately defend my team and my club.”

In a rather tense press conference ahead of Bayer Leverkusen’s visit to the Etihad Stadium for a Champions League match on Tuesday, Guardiola also made a subtle reference to Claudio Echeverri’s agent. The young Argentinian is currently on loan from Manchester City at Leverkusen, where he has faced challenges in securing playing time since his move to the Bundesliga.

Guardiola expressed a wish that Echeverri had chosen to join Girona, a club under the City Football Group umbrella, instead of Leverkusen. “I always hope that players get ample playing time; that is always the intention,” he commented on Echeverri’s situation. “We hold him in high regard as a football player, and I am confident that his agent is aware of everything.”

When asked if Echeverri could potentially return to City in January, Guardiola responded, “That is a question for his esteemed agent.”
