Jess Fishlock Extends Tenure with Seattle Reign FC Following International Retirement

omidbasir- Jess Fishlock, a key midfielder for Seattle Reign FC, has recently announced her retirement from international duty after two decades representing Wales. However, her journey in professional football continues as she has signed a new one-year contract with the Reign that will keep her in Seattle through 2026, celebrating nearly 14 years with the club.

“Upon returning from the Euros, I felt a shift within myself regarding my aspirations and future direction,” Fishlock shared with ESPN. “I still possess an unwavering competitive spirit, a gift that drives me. Even after all these years, I am determined to bring a championship to Seattle.”

Fishlock is the sole player in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) who has remained with the same team since the league’s inception in 2013. Her longtime teammate, Lauren Barnes, also played every season with Seattle since 2013 but announced her retirement at the conclusion of the 2025 season.

Amidst the current NWSL landscape, only Chicago Stars goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and Angel City forward Sydney Leroux are still actively playing in the league from that inaugural season, both of whom have transitioned between teams. Naeher has not yet publicly committed to another season and is currently out of contract, while Leroux took a mental health leave in 2025.

Fishlock was instrumental in the Reign’s success during their NWSL Shield-winning seasons in 2014 and 2015, and her accolades include being named the NWSL MVP in 2021. With an impressive record of 48 goals and 30 assists, she holds the highest goal contributions in the club’s history.

As she approaches her 39th birthday in January, Fishlock led the Reign in scoring during the 2025 season, netting six goals and providing two assists. She expressed a newfound joy at the beginning of the 2025 season, attributing it to the infusion of young talent within the team and the stability brought about by new ownership.

“The key for me has always been my physical condition,” Fishlock explained. “While my mental acuity and football intelligence remain sharp, the question is whether my body can keep pace with my mind. So far, it has.”

The Reign organization has been supportive of her needs, allowing her to manage her physical condition and take necessary breaks, a reflection of the strong relationships she has built in Seattle.

“A one-year deal allows me the flexibility to assess my body continuously,” Fishlock mentioned.

Reign head coach Laura Harvey commended Fishlock’s exceptional game understanding, saying, “Jess sees the game at a level few players do, and her tactical awareness and adaptability in crucial moments are invaluable. Her leadership and experience in the locker room will greatly benefit the team as we move into 2026.”

Fishlock announced her retirement from international play last month after leading Wales to the final stage of the Women’s European Championship for the first time in 2025, where she scored the nation’s inaugural goal in the competition, making her the oldest goalscorer in Women’s Euro history.

Despite contemplating continuing her international career, Fishlock is eager to focus exclusively on her club duties, marking a significant shift in her professional journey.

Throughout her time in Seattle, Fishlock has experienced both the triumphs, including three NWSL Shields, and the challenges, with three losses in the NWSL Championship match. Her enduring connection to the team has seen her through various changes, including relocations and attempts to build a stable fan base.

Reflecting on her commitment, Fishlock stated, “There’s a profound significance in enduring the journey with a single club, navigating both highs and lows. This deep connection enhances every experience, making victories sweeter and setbacks more poignant.”

Having moved from Europe, Fishlock has become deeply rooted in Seattle, expressing, “From the moment I arrived, I’ve wanted to build my entire career here because of the genuine meaning this place holds for me.”
