omidbasir- FC Augsburg approached Saturday’s Bundesliga match against Hamburger SV with an urgent need for a positive outcome. The struggles faced by head coach Sandro Wagner’s team have been particularly challenging for local fans, following two humiliating home defeats against Mainz 05 and RB Leipzig earlier in the season. Augsburg entered the match with the burden of having lost their last three home fixtures.

Though a 1-0 victory over HSV may not have been a resounding triumph, it spared Wagner from having to justify his precarious position in his first significant head coaching role. Following the match, the 37-year-old expressed his relief during an interview with Sky Germany.

“As a young coach, it feels great when the team is focused and believes in the path we’re taking,” Wagner remarked. “That’s the only thing I can cling onto.”

Wagner acknowledged the team’s struggle to secure home victories this season, stating, “We wanted to provide our spectators with an enjoyable afternoon. We felt the pressure to perform.”

He expressed satisfaction with the three points earned, adding, “I’m very glad it proved worthwhile to the team. We had strong teamwork and they worked diligently on their defense.”

Citing the wisdom of former Bundesliga and HSV head coach Huub Stevens, Wagner noted, “As he once said, ‘it’s important to keep a clean sheet when one’s back is against the wall.’ He was my role model this week.”

FC Augsburg’s sporting director, Benjamin Weber, conveyed a sense of relief during his interview with Sky, stating, “I’ll be honest, we really needed this. It feels good not just for us, but for the entire city.”
