omidbasir- FC Augsburg approached Saturday’s Bundesliga match against Hamburger SV with an urgent need for a positive outcome. The team’s struggles under head coach Sandro Wagner had taken a toll on the loyal hometown supporters. Following two significant home defeats to Mainz 05 and RB Leipzig this season, Wagner found himself in a precarious position, defending his role. Prior to Saturday’s match, Augsburg had suffered three consecutive home losses.

The 1-0 victory over HSV, while not an overwhelming triumph, provided a much-needed respite for Wagner and the team. After the match, the 37-year-old expressed his relief in an interview with Sky Germany.

“As a young coach, it feels great when the team is focused and believes in our direction,” Wagner stated. “That’s what I can hold onto.”

He acknowledged the struggles at home, saying, “We haven’t won much at home this season. We aimed to offer our fans an enjoyable afternoon. We felt the pressure.”

Wagner continued, “We are very pleased with the three points. I am glad the team’s efforts paid off. We had excellent interactions on the field, and their commitment to defense was commendable.”

He also referenced advice from former Bundesliga and HSV head coach Huub Stevens, remarking, “As he once said, ‘it’s important to keep a clean sheet’ when under pressure. He was my role model this week.”

FCA sporting director Benjamin Weber echoed Wagner’s sentiments, stating, “I’ll be honest, we really needed this. It feels good not just for us, but for the entire city.”
