Jess Fishlock Signs One-Year Contract to Continue with Seattle Reign FC

omidbasir- Jess Fishlock, a prominent midfielder for Seattle Reign FC, has announced her decision to retire from international duty with Wales after a remarkable two-decade career. However, her commitment to club football remains steadfast, as she has signed a new one-year contract to extend her stay with the Reign through 2026, marking nearly 14 years with the team.

Reflecting on her recent experiences, Fishlock shared with ESPN, “When I came back from the Euros, I just felt a little different. Something had shifted in what I wanted to do and where I wanted to go. I still possess a strong competitive spirit, which is a gift. Even after 14 years, I am eager to bring a championship to Seattle.”

Fishlock is notably the only player in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) who remains with her original team since the league’s inception in 2013. Longtime teammate Lauren Barnes has also been with the Reign since the beginning but retired following the 2025 season after the team faced a quarterfinal exit against Orlando Pride.

Among other players from that inaugural season, only Chicago Stars goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and Angel City forward Sydney Leroux are still active in the NWSL, with both having played for multiple teams. Naeher has yet to confirm her plans for the next season, as she is currently out of contract, while Leroux missed the entirety of 2025 to prioritize her mental health.

Fishlock has been a key contributor to the Reign’s success, playing a crucial role in their back-to-back NWSL Shield victories in 2014 and 2015. She was honored as the NWSL MVP in 2021 and has been named to the league’s Best XI seven times. With a record of 48 goals and 30 assists for Seattle, she holds the highest goal contributions in the club’s history.

As she approaches her 39th birthday in January, Fishlock led the Reign in scoring during 2025 with six goals and two assists. She expressed renewed joy at the start of the season, noting the influx of young talent and the positive changes in ownership.

“For me, it’s always been about my body,” Fishlock remarked. “While my experience and football knowledge will always remain, it’s about whether my body can keep pace with my mind. So far, it has.”

The Reign organization has supported Fishlock in managing her physical health, allowing her to take necessary time off, which she attributes to her strong relationships within the Seattle community.

Head coach Laura Harvey praised Fishlock’s exceptional insight into the game, stating, “Jess sees the game at a level that very few players do. Her tactical awareness and ability to adapt are invaluable as we move into 2026.”

Last month, Fishlock announced her retirement from international play, having led Wales to their first appearance in the final stage of the Women’s European Championship in 2025. She achieved the milestone of scoring Wales’ first goal in the competition, becoming the oldest goalscorer in Women’s Euro history.

Despite considering continuing her international career, Fishlock is excited to focus solely on her club for the first time. Having experienced both triumphs, with three NWSL Shields, and challenges, including three losses in NWSL Championship matches, she has witnessed the team navigate various changes over the years.

Fishlock remarked on her enduring connection to the Reign, emphasizing that winning with another club would not hold the same significance. “Going through this journey with a singular club makes the highs even higher and the lows more poignant, fostering a deep bond with the team and its fan base.”

Her passion for Seattle is evident, as she stated, “From the moment I moved here, I’ve wanted to build my entire career with the Reign. It holds profound significance for me.”
