Diego Luna A Journey of Self Discovery and Resilience in SoccerDiego Luna A Journey of Self Discovery and Resilience in Soccer

omidbasir- Diego Luna has consistently presented an authentic version of himself throughout his public career. His body is adorned with tattoos, each symbolizing a significant moment in his life, a practice he began at a young age, as he shared with GOAL in January.

These tattoos represent a commitment not only to himself but also to the sport of soccer, which has taken him beyond his expectations and allowed him to discover an aspect of himself he had not previously known.

In his early days, Luna was notably shy, working part-time at a coffee shop to enhance his social skills and build confidence. Much of his on-field persona served as a facade, concealing a different reality off the field. However, he has worked diligently to bridge the gap between his public and private selves. This award he received is not merely recognition; it symbolizes the effort he has invested in making his journey visible to others.

“This year has revolved around individual mental health for me,” he stated. “It’s about the struggles I’ve faced, seeking help, and ultimately feeling better. I take pride in reflecting on my journey.”

Luna emphasizes the importance of using his platform to raise awareness about mental health. While he celebrates his successes, he is equally aware of the challenges he encounters, acknowledging that the lows in life often weigh heavier than the highs.

This past year has been marked by significant milestones, including a notable performance during the January camp that solidified his status as a favorite among USMNT fans. His contributions in the Gold Cup were pivotal, scoring three crucial goals leading to the final, and most recently, his impressive goal against Uruguay showcased his ability to compete at the highest international level.

However, beneath the glamour of these highlights lie moments of struggle that Luna candidly admits are often more challenging than achieving success. “There are various hardships that I could discuss, such as my family relationships and my son’s well-being, which can be difficult to articulate,” he reflected. “I could summarize my highs in five minutes, but the lows would take an hour.”

A recent example of this was the abrupt end to RSL’s season. After a commendable performance that included nine goals and seven assists, the team’s playoff run concluded with a disappointing 3-1 loss to the Portland Timbers, triggering a wave of emotions. Luna yearned for the opportunity to continue competing.

In the weeks following this loss, he dedicated himself to training at RSL’s facility, working tirelessly in solitude. “It’s a struggle to show up day after day with a bag full of balls, grinding silently for three weeks while no one is watching,” he explained. “People see the game against Uruguay but not the hard work leading up to it.”

Luna’s determination bore fruit, culminating in a more prominent role within the USMNT, where he became one of the most influential players. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino notably praised his bravery during the January camp, highlighting his resilience in playing through an injury to deliver critical performances.

“Each time I don the national jersey, it feels increasingly gratifying,” he remarked, referring to his international caps. “It’s among the top feelings in life that brings me joy.”

For Luna, scoring transcends mere statistics; it signifies personal achievement and career progression. “Each goal symbolizes not just success on the field but also the culmination of my effort throughout the week. It represents better contracts and the ability to support my family. Scoring is a feeling I never tire of.”

Following his goal against Uruguay, Luna entered the offseason with renewed inspiration. Despite a successful 2024 season that earned him All-Star honors and accolades as the MLS Young Player of the Year, he remained unsatisfied, viewing his accomplishments as merely average. “I believe there’s much more I can achieve,” he stated. “This is just the baseline; I strive for continuous improvement.”

As he anticipates the 2026 season and the looming World Cup, Luna expresses a commitment to enhancing every aspect of his life, both personally and professionally. “This offseason feels particularly significant; it’s an opportunity for me to combine family time with dedication to my craft,” he shared. “I’m treating this period not as an offseason but as a crucial phase of preparation.”

This mindset propelled him to extraordinary heights in 2025, as Luna embraced his identity and continued to grow with the USMNT. As 2026 approaches, he remains steadfast in his preparation for the challenges that lie ahead, ready to confront each obstacle while remaining true to himself.
