omidbasir- Eintracht Frankfurt’s ongoing defensive challenges were once again evident during the Bundesliga match against Köln on Saturday night. The team’s issues with conceding goals extend beyond the defensive line, with goalkeeper Michael Zetterer displaying vulnerabilities on Köln’s first goal. Despite these concerns, head coach Dino Toppmöller has expressed his commitment to keeping the 30-year-old Zetterer as the starting goalkeeper.

Zetterer joined Frankfurt from Bremen this summer following the unexpected departure of squad captain Kevin Trapp, who moved to Paris FC. With Trapp’s exit, Eintracht aimed to develop young Brazilian keeper Kaua Santos as their new No. 1. Anticipating this shift, Trapp submitted a transfer request.

In Zetterer, the RheinMainAdler acquired a seasoned goalkeeper who felt sidelined at Bremen by an emerging talent. Zetterer has made it clear that he did not join Eintracht to serve as a backup to Santos. Following Santos’ return from injury, who struggled in his initial matches, Zetterer’s opportunity to step up presented itself.

Santos returned to play on matchday four, starting in four league games and one Champions League match. However, after conceding 18 goals in those five outings, Toppmöller announced that Zetterer would reclaim the No. 1 position. Despite conceding five goals against Liverpool in the Champions League, Zetterer has managed to keep three clean sheets in seven matches across all competitions, indicating a slight improvement in the team’s defensive performance.

In a recent interview with Kicker, Toppmöller reaffirmed his decision to retain Zetterer as the starting goalkeeper through the winter break, regardless of future developments. Kaua Santos is unlikely to receive another opportunity until at least 2026. “The plan remains that he [Zetterer] will guard the goal until the winter break,” Toppmöller stated. “We still believe that Kauã can become a top goalkeeper. The idea was always that he would be our number one. Zetti knew that when he joined us. Zetti radiates calm and confidence. That’s what we need.”
